    Spiderman comics.........

    Hi,
I'm in the market for purchasing some older Spidey comics. I don't like the new art direction of the webslinger's current comics. However, I can't recall who were the artist i admired more back then......I believe it was John Romita Sr. and Mark Bagley. What do you guys think, and any advice on where i could get these comics at reasonable prices.

if you are just looking for ones to read and enjoy the art look for the newer hardbound reprint editions or in the 80's marvel tales reprinted lots of 60's and 70's sipderman issues (in original order)

Could be Steve Ditko if you are looking for really early stuff.

I had a good amount of older stuff from when I was a kid but have bought several older Spidey comics on Ebay.

I would just be cautious on Ebay since many sellers crop the pictures to make the comic appear to be in better condition than actual.

I have had a lot of luck purchasing from sellers who are just collectors who will point out every little flaw and make no attempt to grade them.

Romita Jr. did a great run in the eighties that intro-ed Hobgoblin.

Here's a thought... "Ditko is to Romita Sr as MacFarlane is to Bagley" respective of their era's (60's and 90's approx, ignoring for now Bagley's run on Ultimate). Discuss!

Also, I'm kind of blanking on any kind of "defining" artist on Spiderman in the eighties for me. I mean Art Adams' stands out in the handful of issues he did draw Spidey (The Annual, Longshot, All New All Differen FF), but I think that is more that he stands out as Art Adams' distinct style than as a Spiderman Artist.

Is it sacrilege that I don't find any of JR Jr's extended runs on Spidey to be very iconic?

^^^ I'd consider the Hobgoblin storyline pretty iconic.

I know McFarlane hit the scene late '80's but I would still say he would be the definining artist of the '80's-90's/

I think it would have been if they hadn't of botched the payoff. Instead they presented Ned Leeds from out of left field *after* they killed him off. I'm sure that if they played it through as it should have, there is the possibility that Hobbie would still be a Big Bad as opposed to mostly being remembered at the top of a chain of Green Goblin knockoffs. Can you imagine if Roderick Kingsley had spent the next twenty years being developed as Peter Parker's arch-villian instead of languishing in obscurity? He could very well have been in Norman's place at the head of HAMMER and the Marvel U's current scourge.

To me, the Death of Kraven was the most iconic 80's Spiderman storyline, but I don't really think of Mike Zeck as a definitive Spiderman artist (Punisher on the other hand...).

The Death of Jean DeWolff is also up there for me, but again, not feelin' the love for the artist on that run.
