    And now...the end is near..

    Howdy.

This has been common knowledge amongst the industry for a while now, but finally its been put into print. Diamond is in DEEP fiscal trouble, and in a hole they cant really recover from.
From what I've heard from insiders, DC doesnt want to step in and resurrect Diamond either, instead they are looking into other solutions.

Rumors about new start up distributors are running rampant behind the scenes right now as well. Nobody wants to say anything official until they know Diamond is dead and buried for fear they recover, the new distributor doesnt pop up, Diamond dumps the "traitors"..and they end up out of business!!

    Interesting times folks!

    GEPPI'S MONEY WOES
In the aggregate of his numerous corporations, Steve Geppi has become a spectacular deadbeat: he may owe somewhat more than $17 million to sundry suppliers and other entities, saith pwbeat.publisherswekly.com. The mounting debt threatens one of his companies that is crucial to the health of the comics industry, Geppi’s Diamond Comic Distributors. Geppi, his Diamond company and his Gemstone Publishing are being sued by a collection agency on behalf of Global Interprint for printing bills of over $373,000. Geppi also owes PNC Bank over $16 million. And Geppi's Entertainment Museum in Baltimore owes more than $700,000 in unpaid rent, late fees and unpaid electric bills dating back to February 2007. Although most of the debt is piled up around Geppi businesses other than Diamond, pwbeat observed, “If Steve Geppi can't pay his bills, something has to give. It certainly puts all of Diamond's recent cost cutting measures — new trade terms, layoffs and so on — into a new light.” DC Comics, according to a rumor that drifted this way, may take over Diamond under the terms of its contract with the company. For details about Geppi's debt woes, visit http://pwbeat. publishersweekly .com/blog/ 2009/02/18/ steve-geppis- debt-woes- growing/ You won’t find there any evidence of the latest rumor, though — namely, that Geppi has pulled the plug on Gemstone Publishing, leaving Russ Cochran and his Missourian minions high and dry.

Wow, as if the comics industry wasn't heading for the crapper already. This new development certainly doesn't bode well.

So if DC can take over where does that leave its competition?

I really don't understand How they are Screwed.
Seems like a Bit of Poor Management to Me...
Most items Super Hero Related that Ever Get Made, from Toys, Statues/Busts, Shirts, Pins, Plates, Posters & The Arse Load of Comics are all Solicited threw Diamond. I'd say like well over 70 percent of the Stuff Diamond Distributes, ... No one Else even Does. I mean has anyone ever looked threw one of those previews Mags ??? Man,, Pages, Upon Pages of endless stuff !!!.

I guess we will see what happens,.. I am pretty confident Whatever matters will be Resolved, & I don't half to Worry about my cool Stuff I like to Buy.

Worst case scenario- Diamond gets sold to another owner or group. Things continue on as is down the path of destruction.
Best case scenario- other vendors come in and there is competition again, better deals for indy companies, better pricing.

I'm thinking DC/Warner will exercise it's option to buy out Geppi but will sell off the company to another corporation or publishing house. Could we be looking at an Amazon type Previews where we order direct, cutting out the shop...or Marvel & DC going print to demand?

I for one would welcome a Previews mag that actually sells comics. More than half of the current book is non-comic related stuff...who actually orders full price DVDs from Diamond when every big box retailer has them a month earlier at discount price?

So, does this mean Diamond Select Toys is boned as well?
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Whenever this kind of thing happens, the folks that get screwed the most are the small press publishers. Such a shame.

On the other hand, perhaps this will finally break the monopoly that Diamond has had on the industry for the past decade. It was probably a healthier industry when there were multiple distributers.

^^^ The small press guys were already getting screwed by Diamond. They set new preorder threshholds that a lot of the little guys could not meet.

Yup!!!! Diamond squashed the once thriving independent market. many cool ideas came from the independent /underground scene. I for one would love to see them go under...and maybe see new distributers carry different titles.

I have owned a shop for 3 years now and I tell ya it is interesting to say the least! But I do have to say hearing some of the old stories from the older comic guys who used to run shops it sounds like Diamond killed a lot of the fun of industry so we'll see what happens.

I worked at a comic shop during the days of the Heroes World debacle. Marvel bought Heroes World, went exclusive with them (of course), DC, Dark Horse and Image followed suit and went with Diamond, and Capital and the other smaller distributors went under along with many of the independent companies they carried. Then of course Marvel went bust and Heroes World died, and they came crawling back to Diamond. My boss was thoroughly disgusted with the whole situation.

Years later I felt the sting of Diamond's stranglehold when they upped the minimum orders on comics, forcing many small publishers to throw in the towel, including Shooting Star Comics, of which I was a part.

I feel for you guys. I'm sure something will come up and comics will carry on, but it will be some even harrier times for comic shops and the industry.

I discovered Shooting Star Comics through The Hutch here in Rochester. Excellent stuff! What a loss. Remind me, which character(s) did you work on, again? They all were my favorites! I have a special place for Golden Hornet and Nick Landime (nickle and dime, get it?) Great stuff!
