Just back from Free Comic Book Day

It's a drizzly day in Oakland, but I decided that wasn't gonna stop me from taking the bus to Dr. Comics and Mr. Games. For the freebies I got:

Archies, DCKids, Cars, Nancy (and Sluggo), and Avengers (for my buddy Falcon).

    I bought:

3 t-shirts: Batman, Spider-Man (w/ the half Peter/half Spidey face, and a Superman Logo shirt (for Falcon). On sale for $4.99 each!

The SuperFriends Vol. 1 collection: (featuring Wendy, Marvin, WonderDog and the WonderTwins). I already have Vol. 2 w/ just the Wonder Twins.

A Star Trek 20Q Game: has anyone seen this? You guys have no doubt heard of 20Q, the game that reads your mind? Well this one (shaped like a TNG Enterprise), can ask questions about the Star Trek TV shows and movies! To a Trekkie, this is cool stuff! You can even detach the "saucer" section (the actual game) from the "battle bridge". It even has a Command star stand for display. This thing is WAAAY cool!

All in all, I'd say it was a pretty productive trip! (oh, and all items were 25% off today!)

    Blackest Night 0!

I've been following Green Lantern, so this was a delight. It did not disappoint. I got a Green Lantern Corps T-Shirt, put JSA 26 on hold - along with the Scotty two-pack. (Now I gotta see if my buddy Craig behind the counter can order the other ones and give me the same sweet deal!) I grabbed the DC Kids book and The Avengers book.
    Shameless self-promotion -

It was drizzly in Oklahoma City, too!

The shop I go to had a three comic limit on the freebies, so I got the Blackest Night #0 that I wanted and the DC Kids Sampler and an Archie for my Niece. I bought a couple of issues I had been thinking about getting into for 30%-off.

It was really great to see so many kiddoes in the place. Lotsa parents with kids and I thought that was really cool.

One of the things that makes me happy about the Comic Shop I go to is they put a premium on kids. They have a Kid's Club where kids get an additional 20% off of anything and Bronze Age Comics in the back-issue stock are $1 for Kids who are members. There was a little Dude who walked up to checkout and I gave him "cuts". He had some Star Wars stuff and when he slapped down his member card, he got a pretty sweet deal on the stuff.

I talked to one of the employees about how Tiny Titans is selling and he said they sell-out every issue. Alright, Art!

I got to a comic shop a half hour before it closed. No DC or Marvel stuff left, but I picked up the Disney/Boom, Dark Horse, and Bongo freebies for the boy. Looks like it was very successful at this particular shop!

I picked up Blackest Night #0 obviously and the Archie and DC Kids books. Once a year I grab an Archie comic for old times' sake. They limit you to 3 free ones at my LCS but usually they have some left over the week after and then its up fro grabs.

Then we hit anothershop cross town in the afternoon and got a few more. I missed the Dark Horse one though...did it have an Indiana Jones story in it?

That is funny. In identical circumstances, we got the same three books.

My Shop only Had Blackest Night & Avengers left...., He ordered Heavier on those,.. & that was all that was pretty much left when I walked in at 3. Good for him,.. I know he got a ton of instore Buissness with the event today, & with the Economy ..., its a good Day for the people with small comic shops.

It had a little three page story in it. It was cute, but nothing to write home about.

I thought the Archies and the Bongo ones were great. Liked Blackest Night and my daughter went to sleep reading DC Kids.
                        It's all good!

It appeared that FCBD is an increasingly huge success. The stores I went to this year were just filled with families and kids that were not regular customers into the comic stores. I noticed that the best stores capitalized on the traffic with cheap bins of dollar comics and there were new customers digging in looking for stuff like Star Wars or Wolverine or Archies.

It seemed that one of the most popular items was Sonic the Hedgehog... I didn't even realize Sonic was still a character that the kids were exposed to. Is there a cartoon or current video game featuring Sonic out right now or is he kind of like Sega's Mario in that he never really went away and remains a staple with video game kids?
