I hear it can be quite overwhelming.

Any advice for someone going to San Diego Comicon for the first time?

Only take a limited amount of cash, do take pics to share with us, have a great time."Steel-like jaws clacked away, each bite slashing flesh from my body - I used my knife and my hands, and when they were gone, my bloody stumps - and yet the turtles came."Comment

Go on the Thursday or the Friday, it's much less populated and you'll be able to get around.
If you go on the weekend for a guest or a panel, you won't feel bad about avoiding the dealer floor as you saw it already. On Saturday I found myself going up stairs just so I could cross it.
Also, if you see a milling of people in costume, get far away, those people stand for endless photographs (especially if it's a gah-gah-girl!) and block the aisles needlessly. I started just walking into people's photographs.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

Wear comfortable clothes, particularly shoes as megomilk said.
If you like to attend panels, plan out your day. Prioritize what you want to do. There are often long lines for the more popular panels. The con purposely counterprograms popular themes against each other to split the crowd up. Just realize you're not going to be able to attend everything, so pick out your favorites.
If you like comics, attend a least one panel moderated by Mark Evanier. He's the best and you will appreciate hearing the stories told by the greats who made comics happen.
The DC and Marvel panels are fun, but they really don't reveal too much that you won't be able to read about later online or in solicitations. The creator spotlights are more informative about the creators.
Be patient
Take cash. Hit an ATM machine off site before going into the show.
Realize snacks and dinners will be expensive if you eat at the convention or in the Gaslamp downtown area or at the hotel restaurants.
definitely make a budget and a want list. You can find just about whatever you are looking for there, but if you're like me, it is easy to over do it.
Do most of your purchasing late in the day, especially if the item is big, because you will have to carry it around.
If you are buying art, consider what you will carry it in. I always take a mailing tube. Some collectors bring their own art pad for the artists to do their sketches in.
If you plan to park your car at the convention center. You can't get there too early. I'm talking 7 a.m. or before.
If you do that, walk over to the Marriot at the convention center and ejoy the buffet breakfast. It's pricey but excellent. And you probably won't be hungry until dinner.
Then go outside and read comics around their pool area before the show opens at 10 a.m.Last edited by madmarva; Apr 12, '09, 6:06 PM.Comment

Thanks Guys! Just booked my tickets for Thursday and Friday.
Is there a protocol for getting exclusives? Is there somewhere on line that lists which exclusives are available? I didn't notice any links to exclusives on the SDCC site.
What are the lineups like to get in? Do I have to go early to get my pass and then line up?Comment

If you haven't registered, I'd go ahead and do it. It will save you time on Thursday morning.
If you are going to be in San Diego on Wednesday it would probably be worth your while to pick up your badge then. There will be a line, but it won't be nearly as bad as will be on Thursday. It could save you as much as an hour on Thursday if you already have your badge in hand.
If that's not an option, and you go when the con opens at 10 a.m. on Thursday will be a big line that will probably stretch back to the Marriott hotel. Just be patient. If there is not a panel that you really want to see at 11 a.m. I'd suggest letting the initial rush go through and show up around 11 or 11:30. The line won't be as long the rest of the day after the initial rush.
The good news is the registration lines get worse on Friday and Saturday, but since you'll have that taken care of, you'll be in the show before all those who are just registering.
