Can't say I care for the artwork....this painted look is one of the reasons this book has been off-schedule for quite some time. In fact, the landscape has changed so much since it was originally solicited that it's now a mini instead of an ongoing. IMO Alex Ross is one of the few individuals who can pull off this type of artwork and make it be worth the wait.
Although I'm curious about the working relationship between the two Atoms...and hey, Killer Moth, what's not to love about that ...but I'm not too excited about this project. Batwoman, the blue-skinned Starman and Congorilla have no place IMO on a JLA team with the likes of GL, GA and the Atom. Supergirl fits though, no problems there. I haven't been too crazy about James Robinson's work since he returned to DC on "Superman"....it seems his glory days of "Starman" are definitely behind him.
Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!
It is interesting to observe that in the years that he left comics for the movies (LXG, Comic Book Villians), his protege (Geoff Johns) continued to hone his craft in this medium and surpassed him in regards to a notable and strong body of work. Not to say that Robinson's stuff (Like his Face to Face Batman arc) isn't a solid read and generally more compelling than most titles.
Although it is the second and third stringers that draw me to this. I always thought Robinson was best when he was given something like Starman or Vigilante which he could work from the ground up without too much baggage. His Legends of DCU arc on Superman or his Batman stuff of the same period just didn't have the same kind of magic as Jack Knight, The Shade, et al.
I'm hoping he returns to The Shade and maybe Starman sooner rather than later. With Tony Harris wrapping up Ex Machina in the near future, maybe we will finally see Jack Knight in Japan!
I'm really looking forward to this book.
The illustration is to ambitious for a monthly. However, I would love to see more of this kind of work done for limited series. Perhaps because I've been reading comics for 30+ years it seems that when I pick a book up one of the first things that comes to mind is who influenced the artist. It's nice to look at the illustration and not immediatly recognize the style being aped.
As for the characters. It's my understanding that this team is more Justice League Task Force then Justice League proper. This team is more about going in and taking care of problems before they become problems. In that context, I have no problem with the characters used. Hell, they've got more clout then those created for the Detroit League.
This is looking interesting. I'm actually interested n what he'll do with Congorilla, and the alien Starman was handled very well in the Starman series, so that could be good too.
It looks like the Freddy Freeman Shazam character has been cut from the book ( I hope!) as they seem to be retooling the Marvels again (or at least removing them from circulation for awhile until the Winick-stink wears off).
Don't mind the painted art, as long as it comes out on time.
I had the exact same feelings as many of you as I looked at the pics.
Not bad, not my favorite art by any means. The exact thought that went through my head was this looks like the type of art that makes a monthly book late. I already dropped JLA with #26 but I'm considering getting it again since I'll be going with a new comic service soon and saving some money.
