    Why is Obama in Spidey?

Can someone please explain why the President is in the new Spider-Man comics? Please explain the story that goes along.

It's only an eight page backup story about the Chameleon trying to take Obama's form and get sworn in instead of Barrack. Spider-Man just happens to be in the area(?) and gets involved. He figures out who the real imposter is and gets a predidential fist bump before leaving.

It's pretty much a story that likely took two days to put together from script to colors. It's a novelty item for me, nothing more. I was caught up in the excitement at the time but have since returned to the political cynic I always was.

Past presidents have been in comic book covers before, no big deal either way.

              Hmmmm....

Funny thing; it sort of ACCIDENTALLY goes back farther than that. You'd do stuff like this as a draw for the audience; making the world of the comic more like their own. "Hey! Neat! That's just like real life!" Marvel has a long history of doing this, since one of the tennets of the ORIGINAL books, way back in the early 60's was to do superheroes living in the real world. Which is why most of the Marvel characters reside in New York, and not "Bigopolis."

During the election The President stated as a kid he read Spiderman and was a big fan.
So the guys at marvel wanted to put him in as a thanks.
(Selling out a larger than normal run as well as already reprinting for more helps alot)
With the $$ this issue made I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up in other titles.

It definitely got Marvel some mainstream attention. We did a story on it along with many other outlets. I was in DC, coordinating our coverage for the Inauguration when one of our crews came back to our makeshift HQ with a "surprise" they picked up for me.

I heard the same story about him being a big Spidey fan and it was done as an homage to Obama as well as a very successful marketing tool.

According to my local comic shop; they made the first variant available only to those who increased their normal purchases of the regular issue. The owner of our local shop told me he didn't know this was happening until after the fact or he would have ordered more. As a result, he had no other choice but to have a lottery for the 1st variant with a promise that if you didn't win a 1st variant, you had 1st dibs on a 2nd variant if you wanted one. He said it was like a rolling snowball. He was selling everything fast.

I believe the 1st variant is the rarest of all followed by the regular edition, than 2nd variant. 3rd and 4th variants were easy to find as was 5th but again, he said they were selling like gang busters.

Apparently, there is a Michelle Obama comic that was just released which is more or less a biography in comic book form. I have one coming to me at cover price but didn't bother to see what they are fetching on Ebay as of yet....not that I care.

One of the Showcase reprint books of old Superman comics has a funny appearance by a president. JFK posed as Clark Kent to help Superman keep his secret identity for national security purposes.
