Marvel Classic Illustrated Comics

Anybody remember these? My dad sold 3 packs of these back in the day, at first I thought them lame but eventually I read every issue (my folks turned the TV every summer). Now as an adult I realize they gave me an appreciation of the classics.

I think the ones I remember best are Time Machine, Count of Monte Cristo, and Tom Sawyer.

Brian, Marvel is bringing back the Classic Illustrated line. I just saw a Jungle Book 2 weeks ago (old Gil Kane Marvel Fanfare reprints) but new stuff is supposed to be coming out. The Last of the Mohicans is first up. In addition to dusting off the classics, Marvel also has dusted off Roy Thomas...apparently he's the major script contributor to these.

what a noble idea Marvel had, and what a dismal failure.

i have a couple of these, and even stories you'd think would really lend themselves to a comic book--the Invisible Man, Jekyll/Hyde, etc, were handed to art teams like Win Mortimer and Vince Colletta---THE HORROR!!

Its a shame that Marvel didnt hand them to the young turks just hitting the biz at the time, like P Craig Russell, Howard Chaykin, Walt Simonson--then they coulda had somethin'!

I picked up more than a few of those back in the day. Especially the "cool" ones for a kid. Like War of The Worlds, Frankenstein , and Jeckyll and Hyde.

I collected them ... more for the covers than the interiors.

Yeah the covers seem to be all handled by Gil Kane, even though I read these all as a kid the interior art was a real shock. It's not the Marvel standard that's for sure, I wonder if they were going for something else?

I recall being turned off from them as a kid originally but eventually enjoying reading them. It gave me two of my favorite books as an adult, the Time Machine and Count of Monte Cristo.

Count me in as another fan of the Marvel Classics. I started buying them as a kid because the stories were complete in one issue, and because they were mercifully free of spandex-clad ubergoobers.

The reprinted Day of the Triffids adaptation in Marvel's British Planet of the Apes weekly comic completely blew me away. I've been a fan of "John Wyndham" ever since.

Me too, I still think The Chrysalids had a lot to do with the X-Men and the Tomorrow People.

The thing that blew me away about these comics was the idea that hollywood had screwed my intpretations of the characters. Mr Hyde wasn't an ape like monster, Dracula was wasn't Lugosi and I won't even go into Mysterious Island.....
