    Jonah Hex

I know a couple of you other guys collect it as well,I just wanted to touch base and see what you guys thought so far?Plus I'm tired of seeing only superhero threads!!!
Time to bring the westerns back to the top.

I just finished reading Issue #40...
I must say I have really enjoyed this series so far and am really looking forward to the direction they are heading.
Gritty and gruesome the way Hex should be.
    So whats your thoughts?
    Any dislikes?

I haven't been reading the latest Jonah Hex, but I think I might wade into it. However, I have been collecting some of the Western stuff from the 70s, particularly the Marvel titles, lately. Kind of been on a Western kick since someone here posted about buying a ton of them at an estate sale. I missed out on them as a kid and feel like I have discovered a whole new world.

Been reading it since the relaunch...one of my favorite books each month. Along with House of Mystery, Madame Xanadu, and War That Time Forgot...I'm digging the non-super-hero stuff lately.

Yeah, I jumped on JH with the first issue and haven't missed any yet. I'm not crazy about one or two of the rotating artists but it's almost always a solid read. Always goes to the top of my stack.
I also have been collecting the original series (Weird Western & Jonah Hex) and still need maybe a dozen or so issues to complete the run and then I will actually READ them!
Don't ask. It's a thing I have with comics series.
Right now I'm almost done with DC Comics Presents. Most of them I have never read before. I think I just finished issue 65.
I also liked HEX and bought all those new off the rack.

I like the classic series better, at least before they stuff him into the future later in the run. I do like that classic series ended with him in the furture finding a statue of himself with white hair in Wild West grab. Mine one day he'll find his way home.

Trust me I know what you mean...LOL
I was lucky enough to have collected the original as a kid so no need to go back but I hate having a couple of issues of a series I absolutely have to have them all!!!
I'm the same way get them all and start reading at #1 or forget it...LOL

This series is actually one of my favorites usually always delivers story wise.It is the first one of my titles I get then read right away...LOL
Makes me feel like a kid again the anticipation of the story...LOL

The only other title I get pumped about is Conan...

But I know what you guys are talking about I am so fed up with the hero story lines I dumped them all long ago...

Just time for westerns and swords I guess.

I am not a huge fan of some of the artists that have drawn Jonah but as long as they never ever let that clown Keith Giffen draw him again I'll be a happy man.His foray into the Hex series made me want to puke.
I wish they would redo the last 3-4 issues of hex over again with a better Artist and through in a quick little story of how he got back to current timeline again...Ah wishful thinking.

I have read that they are bringing in a few of Hex's old nemesis from the original series back in 09.

            I'm thinking probably Turnbull?
It would also be really cool to see El Papygayo again as well.I think he could be a really cool recurring villain for Hex.

Also the Chameleon would rock if they brought him back...

Ok, good. It's not just me. LOL
There are some series I've been completing for 20 years and still haven't read a single issue! Like Wonder Woman.
I need 25 more issues and then I sit down and read #179-#329.

OMG! I thought that was just me, too! I absolutely HATED when they let Giffen ruin it. I truly believe that is what got it canceled. That was in his "I'm not going to draw any faces, just black shadows" phase. S-U-C-K-E-D!!!

I wish they would do a quick little story of how he got back to current timeline again...Ah wishful thinking.
I seem to think they did do a story where they told that but I could be wrong. Possibly in Secret Origins???

That Jonah Hex Spectacular from 1978 was awesome. The story of how he died, etc. Highly recommend.

Hmm...I'll have to check my JH stock pile to see if there is a story as to his return.I don't think so though I remember almost all of them, just fan speculation I think.
I do remember a secret origins that did have hex in it as a dead stuffed cowboy.

Yes the '77 spectacular is Fantastic.Truly one of my Favorite stories. And the black and white pull out inside cover is awesome.

I really like the newer story with Hex and his son that was cool as well.
Yeah Don't get me started on Giffen....Grrr...
I believe he was hired to kill off the series due to declining sales
He actually caused me to quit collecting for about 5-6 yrs.
I was so upset over his artwork.Especially seeing his other work from that time.
He would never have been allowed to pull that crap off with superman or batman.
For me the artwork means more than the story.I want to see something visually to take me somewhere else to be someplace else.A crappy story you can sit through knowing next time it should be better.Bad art is unbearable to sit through for me.Comics equal artwork.
If I want fantastic story telling I have no problem picking up a great novel.
Don't get me wrong,I like a good story in my books it's just the art seems to mean a little more.
Lets face it many times I've picked up books based on who the artist was,not who the writer was but that may just be me.

Some of my favorite stories from the first series were the ones with Fleshier writing and Texiera drawing(even though Texiera screwed up his holsters all the time).

I also heard they are working on the Jonah movie with Josh Brolin to play Hex.

I really like the current series, but to me the original had more depth. I need to get off my butt and track some more of those issues down.

I would love to see a movie, as long as it doesn't turn out to be Clint Eastwood meets the Punisher. Violence is a must, but the underlying loneliness and futility of original series is what will make or break the movie for me.

Always wished they'd make one with Clint Eastwood as Hex. Maybe they can get him to play his father?

I hear ya on the art vs story thing. I'm pretty much the same way. Bad story is not a good thing either. Don't get me started on Final Crisis.

Jonah Hex is an excellent series on my must buy list. I love the one & done approach. Wish other comics would use that more. Having said that, I also wouldn't mind a 2 or 3 issue tale, send Hex off on a quest of some sort. Maybe a couple less gore & vengeance stories, more Civil war stuff.

I'd also like to see him meet up with some other DC western heroes besides Bat Lash & El Diablo. At a convention last year I briefly talked to Jimmy Palmiotti about the book, and suggested that he do Hex meeting his complete polar opposite in DC Westerns, someone like Johnny Thunder or Nighthawk. The hard-*ss cowboy meets the more super-heroic type contrast in techniques tale. He didn't seem too keen on it, but then they used El Diablo, so maybe there's hope. I'm hoping it's El Papagayo coming back as the villain.

In the JLU cartoon where Batman, Wonder Woman, and GL meet the western heroes Hex tells Batman he's had experience with time travel. that was a great episode with Pow-Wow Smith and all.

I don't think they ever did a return from the future story though, and basically it's been ignored. There was a modern female version of Hex in Superboy a few years ago, but I think that's been ignored as well.

Of the new Hex artists, I really like Jordi Bernet's art, reminds me of Alex Toth a bit, Darwyn Cooke a lot. Of the original run I always like Jose Garcia-Lopez, an artist that doesn't get anywhere near the amount of praise he should (along with Jim Aparo).

Keith Giffen is NOT one of my favorite artists, his early Kirby rip-offs wre terrible. I think if the Ambush Bug stuff wouldn't have hit at the tme it did, he would have faded away, but it gave him the boost to get on series like Justice League and do the "funny stuff" there as well. Meh.

It's good to hear the new series is a solid read.
I had several original issues of Weird Western, etc., but I didn't have the full run.
Thanks to DC Showcase books, I have a cheap way of reading all the old books
in order. And they made a great action figure too!
As a kid, I always preferred Marvel heroes, but DC did great Horror/War/Western books.
