    My mom wants to know...

    The origin of Captain Marvel.

I was showing my mom the intros to the live action Isis and Shazam this morning, and although she read the comics as a kid, she doesn't know how Captain Marvel got his powers. And what about his family?

    Anybody got any answers?

Sharry,(did I spell your name right? It's important to me to get it right and I hope I did.)

Scroll down to the heading "The Fawcett Universe" (a little more than half-way down) and you will find this:

Alone and on the streets of a major metropolitan city, orphaned newsboy Billy Batson was led into an abandoned subway tunnel by a mysterious stranger.
That's the origin as I know it.

You could check out "Dial B For Blog" for some interesting background.

            Captain Marvel Jr

            And then Wiki...

            Captain Marvel

The origins go back pretty far.

                Long story short....

Orphan Billy Batson meets ancient wizard Shazam in an abandoned subway tunnel. By speaking Shazam's name (an acronym made up of the first letters of the names of the gods who bestowed their powers upon the wizard*), Billy Batson is transofrmed into Captain Marvel, the World's Mightiest Mortal.

                * Solomon (Wisdom), Hercules (Strength), Atlas (Stamina), Zeus (Power), Achilles (Courage) and Mercury (Speed)

When Billy's sister Mary Batson speaks the name Shazam, she gains half of Capt. Marvel's powers, but her powers come from the goddesses: Selene (Grace), Hippolyta (Strength), Ariadne (Skill), Zephyrus (Fleetness), Aurora (Beauty) and Minerva (Wisdom).

Capt. Marvel saves lame (crippled) newsboy Freddy Freeman and brings him to Shazam. Now when Freddy says the name of his hero "Captain Marvel", he gains a portion of Cap's powers and goes by the name Captain Marvel Jr.

Then of course there are the 3 Lt. Marvels who have Shazam powers and Uncle Marvel who has no powers but pretends to be super-powered until his "Shazambago" acts up.
