Wanted: Reference Books for Comic Heros & Villians

I put this here because it seemed logical, but perhaps it could've gone in Custom Mego Discussion....
Anyway, Is there a short list of the best books for reference infomation regarding Comic Heros?? I know there are many Marvel and DC encyclopedia type books out there, but am having trouble sorting thru them all and would like to narrow down the choices somewhat.

I am looking for great illustrations, good descriptions and background info, and also variations; Golden age, Silver age, Future age, Elseworld, less popular characters, etc.
Yeah, there's always the internet for reference, but it doesn't take the place of a good book. Thanks for your input.

    Hmmmm....

I think you're best bet is the Handbook Of The Marvel Universe and DC Who's Who series'.

There are two books that are out of print, The Encyclopedia of Super Heroes and The Encyclopedia of Super Villains, both by Jeff Rovin. They are sparse on pictures and illustrations, but packed with info on even the most obscure characters, from the 30s to the 80s.

DC and Marvel both have Encyclopedias published by DK that are currently in print.

And you can't go wrong with the Handbooks and Who's Who like ctc described.
