According to Dan DiDio, one of the reason's behind Winnick's "The Trials of Shazam" was to official christen Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) "Shazam!" since that's how he's often identified anyway. Such a STOOPID idea for jostling everyone's position around in the Marvel Family...

Billy took the name Marvel. Which means his name couldn't appear on the cover of a DC comic.
Freddy took the name Shazam. Which is also his magic word. So, Freddy still can't tell people who he is without calling down the lightning.
Mary ... um ... I guess Giffen finally got the joke he always wanted to tell.

Thanks for clarifying...I knew that DiDio wanted the main character (now Freddy) to be called "Shazam", I just thought it was Billy. I didn't want to go anywhere near that Winnick crap.

Mary first sported that outfit in Countdown. I bailed on Countdown about a quarter of the way in. Did she finish the series in that outfit or did she start going baby doll\punk at the end of Countdown?

If I'm remembering correctly, Mary is now powered by the pantheon that gives Black Adam his abilities. I believe this happened early on in Countdown. Those that read 52 and WWIII will recall that that particular pantheon is a rather hard core group. When Black Adam was going on his Kill all Bailyans rampage, Captain Marvel spoke to Adam's pantheon in hopes that they would remove their powers from Adam. They declined telling Cap that they didn't have a problem with how Adam was acting out.

I should look it up, but is that an Alex Ross cover? It looks like Ross and yet it's not as tight as his usual work. If it is Ross, then I'm surprised he painted the cover at all. What with his disdain for everything past 1989. Which could explain why the cover isn't up to his usual standards.
