Captain Cold and Solomon Grundy. Found a bunch of old pictures I took around 2000 on a portable hard drive (must have come from a CD), and these two guys were among them. They are currently out in one of my displays, but they are a bit unique among my customs in that these two go back so far that I actually played with them. Both have been tweaked and upgraded over the years, but most of both are the same as they were. Cold’s white fur replaced the original stretched out pieces of cotton balls I glued on him. The icicle shape on his shoulders replaced an old piece of material cut in a similar way that was just glued on. And I did re-sew the gloves to give him proper thumbs (I originally covered the thumbs with taped material and stuck them through the seams when I started making costumes). But the figure (Vance Duke), hood, bodysuit, goggles and belt are all his originals. You can tell the difference in the texture of the blue material, as it’s noticeably different than what I subsequently used on my figures. Grundy’s only upgrade was replacing the cotton ball hair with fur. The paint job has never been updated, nor the costume. The figure is Dr. Steel from Big Jim, the shirt is Luke Duke’s, the boots are GI Joe’s with a “V” cut out the front, and the suit is sewn by me (again, you can tell it’s a different, heavier material than I usually use). It’s not finished on all the edges and the jacket collar is a very early version of the way I do them now. I have a number of custom figures made from the actual figures I played with as a kid (Superman, Green Arrow, Supergirl, Riddler, among others), but all of them have gone through some major costume changes over the years. These two, though, are still mostly in their original, played with form. I could do updated, better versions of them, but I like still having these old friends around.
