About a month ago, I saw a custom Mego figure on the forum that blew my mind. It was BATMAN89's American Crusader. To me, it was perfect in every way. I immediately wanted to copy one for myself. But then I thought to myself that I'm really not going to improve on such a fantastic figure and maybe it was best to move onto something that I can call my own. I didn't even know that the American Crusader character existed. Turns out he is in the public domain with all these other forgotten cool characters from the golden age of comics.
I did some poking around and stumbled onto the Public Domain Super Heroes Wiki. It was there where I found a plethora of wonderful characters just begging to be brought back to life in custom Mego form.
I spent many a lunch hour sifting through characters and pulled about 20 or so that I wanted to do Megos of. But there was one name that really jumped out at me. It was "Captain Tootsie". I've never heard of him and had no idea he was associated with Tootsie Rolls, one of my favorite candies.

I started reading about him and became obsessed. Captain Tootsie was a two fisted man of action created in part by C.C.Beck of Captain Marvel fame and is actually pretty well known as a shill for Tootsie Rolls & Pops back in the 40's & 50's. Apparently he was in most of the golden age comics of the day with these fun full page ads featuring his adventures and eating a Tootsie roll to give him the energy to meet and conquer any challenge he faced. He also had a "Secret Legion" comprised of a trio of young lads, Fisty, Fatso & Rollo who help him in all his adventures. He also had his own book, "Captain Tootsie and the Secret Legion" which ran for two issues.
Enough of my prattling, here's Captain Tootsie!

The head is from eBay reworked and painted by me.
Body is a Zica Type S
Clothes & bag are from CTVT
Chest "T" was made from some scrap cloth
Tootsie Rolls & Pops are buttons I found at the craft store

CTVT's Jimmy Olsen bag is very nice and functional. The belt is a white CTVT Mego repro dyed blue. If you wanted to make the comic version, a white belt would do just fine.
As for footwear, Captain T's shoes were drawn differently in nearly every ad he appeared in. Sometime he wore booties, sometimes shoes. In his comic book he wore black boots. I found a panel in an ad showing him wearing black dress shoes and floppy blue socks. I felt this look was the most absurd so I went with it. Some cut down Mego black super hero boots would be great for the comic book version.

The head is a modified Superman head. I got rid of the spit curl and softened the chin and face to give him a more cherubic look. I suppose he would also make a good Aquaman. The eyes are painted Tootise Roll brown if you are wondering.

Kryptonite gotcha down? Try one of these!

From low level street thugs to the best that the Third Reich had to offer, Captain Tootsie fought them all!

Sometimes Captain T had a mean streak...

These two hit it off right away
Check out BATMAN89's awesome American Crusader!
