    My First Customs: Tomland Monsters

I just finished my first set of customs, based on Tomland's Famous Monsters and Star Raiders figures.

I bought the resin Tomland heads and fly claw from Dr. Mego. The costumes and weapons were from Classic TV Toys, as were the bodies of Yog and Zhor. The other figures have Zica/Castaway Type S bodies. This was my first attempt at making custom figures, so it was sort of a learning experience.

My biggest mistake I made was trying to spray paint the different colored bodies. Some of the paint ended up fusing the joints together, and I ended up with several broken arms, feet, and hands when I tried to move them. Also, the paint didn't even come out looking that great. So if I need to color a body again, I think I'll try dying it, or painting it by hand. No more spray paint.

I also cheaped out on the model paint I used, and that turned out not to be that great. Some of the paint needed multiple coats and ended up looking kind of sloppy and thick. Next time I'll use higher quality paint, like Testors Model Masters or something.

Still, it's okay that I made some mistakes, because I learned from them, and I had a lot of fun putting these figures together.

    ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN

This was the first one I did, and I pretty much just copied the paint job directly from the original Tomland figure. The only difference is his outfit, which is CTVT "ghost" outfit.

    MORLOCK

For the Morlock, I took my paint inspiration from the Morlocks in the 1960 movie "The Time Machine" rather than from the original Tomland figure. I did retain a bit of the original color scheme from the Tomland figure's clothes, though, with a modified Robin Hood outfit from CTVT.

    CYCLOPS

For the Cyclops, I kept his green color, but I added more details and went for more of a reptile kind of thing, sort of like a Sleestak or something.

    YOG AND ZHOR

These two were the Star Raiders of my bunch, and I thought it would be fun to give them matching outfits and make them a pair of Space Pirates. Yog (the fish face) is the first mate and Zhor (horned alien) is the captain. I imagine they are like an evil alien version of Gilligan and the Skipper.

    THE FLY

This figure was based more on the original movie version of "The Fly." That includes the fire axe, which is what The Fly used to smash up his lab equipment in the original film.

Thanks! I didn't see a Dagon head when I was ordering these other heads, or I would have got one of those, too. But I definitely will be doing some more stuff in the future, since I had a lot of fun doing these ones.
