Carrie Fisher and Gary: She's Articulate...AND Articulated!

Hi, Everyone. I've missed being here regularly (working a lot...as are most folks here) and haven't done a custom for a while. I began this one last September and chipped away at it bit by bit.

What lead me to do an action figure of Carrie Fisher (NOT Princess Leia)? I listened again to her audiobooks over the past few months on my long commute to/from work. If you haven't listened to her read her books--in particular Wishful Drinking--then you're missing a lot. Even better is the HBO film of the stage production of Wishful Drinking. Anyway, I wanted to focus on a figure with better articulation than the dolls that have been produced and I wanted to do a likeness of the current Carrie, rather than the subtle Leia resemblance. I also wanted to focus on her post-Star Wars roles and appearances, except for a nod to Star Wars with the card background and font.

Carrie's constant companion is Gary, her French bulldog. He's adorable, with a tongue that usually is hanging out. Carrie calls it his "flesh waterfall tongue".

Below are some images I used for inspiration for hair, Gary, etc. In the top right corner is my version of Gary, complete with red leather tongue.

Here are Carrie and Gary, carded. I had wanted to use matte varnish on the head, but my matte varnish went bad or something. I wasn't happy with its performance so I used satin. In the end, it was probably for the best, as the satin smoothed out the sculpt and also perhaps made my limited (but improving?) painting skills look better.

I even incorporated Carrie's solar system right ankle tattoo:

Here are two card backs. I did two cards with identical fronts, but differing backs. I am leaning toward preferring the left hand card. I wanted to use web images of Carrie that were not "ambush" photos from nutty photographer/stalkers but instead were semi posed or conveyed permission/consent for the photo to be taken.

The hairstyle was deceptively difficult: not simply pulled back but it has kind of a flip:

I had some fun and did my versions of several of Carrie's roles and appearances. Note the props from Wishful Drinking: R2D2, Leia buns, and the stretcher!

Perhaps this is what Carrie's writing space looks like? Trusty Gary is close by.

Lastly, here are Carrie and Gary...fighting for Truth, Justice, and the American Way!

Many thanks for looking! It's good to be back!

I never would have thought anybody would do a Carrie Fisher custom outside of Princess Leia... You pulled it off pretty nicely...

Great job! This has to be one of the most unique customs I've seen on this board.

Love the shot of her with the bat and robe from The Big Bang Theory. You should have her chasing after a Biff-Bang Pow Sheldon.

I just had to comment on this again
I love all the extra shots and outfits - you really knocked this out of the park!

I have been lucky enough to meet her a few times.
She sang a lullaby to my daughter Bella at C5 - I also meet her outside the stage door of Wishful Drinking

                      She is an amazing woman.
You should track her down to sign the figure.

                      She would freaking love this
                      Awesome work!

^Wow! That is amazing! I would love someday to meet her live.
I may send pix of the figure to her fan mail address...we'll see. In any case, thanks for your kind comments and for sharing your experiences with Carrie!

EDITED TO ADD: You are SO lucky to have had her sing! Her voice is unbelievable. It's too bad she doesn't sing more often.

This is conceptually off-the-beaten-path... and incredibly well executed. The dress up angle is inspired. I love customs like this!

                            ^ thanks, Sprytel.

Guilty as charged. LOL! Among my other customs have been David Letterman and Paul Schaffer, Scott Bakula/Jonathan Archer and Porthos, and Jim Rockford. VERY off the beaten path! Many thanks for the kind words.

Such a cool custom! Very original. And I saw her when she was her in San Jose a few years back. Amazing show!
