    Vintage Dime Store monsters thread

I originally had this thread here

I cannot really sculpt well at all. However when I do, my lack of expertise comes through with these "made by a second grader" look of monsters and other odd creatures. They have a nice vintage appeal of the many odd plastic/rubber monsters of the 1960's and 70's that may have lacked super detail, but had a neat

but it made more sense to have it under one generic thread with a generic title rather than "creature specific"

So any that I create from this point on will be posted in here:

in a nutshell from the other thread and sums up the goal I am looking for:

I cannot really sculpt well at all. However when I do, my lack of expertise comes through with these "made by a second grader" look of monsters and other odd creatures.
They have a nice vintage appeal of the many odd plastic/rubber monsters of the 1960's and 70's that may have lacked super detail, but had a neat coolness to them. I try my best to
emulate that. Back then many companies truly made "monsters" and this sort of art is lost today.

This would be my second creation and he has that sort of colorful Alien look of things from the 70's. I mention 70's because many of the rubber "people monster things" were created with rainbow style swirls of rubber color. Also often made crudely. I loved the way many of them had a translucent appearance and holding said item up to a light source would make it really glow and you can then see so many other colors working (hidden) in the background. I love that glow look.

Below is my attempt at such a thing with sculpty, allumilite mold compound and resin mixed with acrylic paint. The last picture below is how I see this things in my head with (in my eyes) a sort of "Monster Movie on a Saturday of the 1970's" look or something to terrorize the Fisher Price Adventure people

with the exception of the last diorama picture, the others were taken before I trimmed away some of the excess resin

      Thank you!!!

My next one is more of a straight 1980's horror with a toxic/pollution- ecological disaster sort of theme. This theme of nature run amok in films and books was big in the years of 1979-1982, with all sorts of monstrosities created from mans disregard for the environment-- Hence we now have this guy:

I dub him "The Slimy Slithering Lurking Horror of the Black Swamp"

Part human, part spawn of the unseen toxins leaked into the eerie Black Swamp from the Nuclear waste facility a few miles up the creek which bleeds into this swamp deep in the woods, where most men fear to tread. Ahh you get the idea of what I was going for

Originally I wanted to make something called "Blob People". It would have the head of the Fisher Price Adventure People father from the Sea Explorer set and he was going to have human like arms. The rest would have been a blob like body so this gelatinous ooze just slithers around devouring any victim unfortunate enough to cross it's path.

While doing my primitive sculpting I used a dollar store skeleton head instead (these skeletons were also sold at Michael's around Halloween time. About 5" tall and like 3-4 come to a pack). I also started giving him more of the snake like slimey limbs and this changed the focus of the project

I did use red and black acrylic mixed with the resin and this is where I kind of screwed it. I wanted the limbs and the front of the skull face redd-ish with the rest of the body black. But he came out a snip too dark. I should have probably cast him with the red acrylic and clear resin and then dry brushed on the black. But no matter he still looks pretty sinister to me

Until I do something more permanent for the "slime" look just wetting him with water worked for this. A few of the pics are shown with him in this state.
Also for the final outdoor shot I wanted to dig a small hole and fill it with water and possibly have some toxic barrels nearby. However I could not find a small bowl I did not need to make a fake swamp in and I also do not have any toxic toy barrels (yet). I did consider using "toy slime" that you can make (and I do have some handy) but it would have ended up becoming a bigger mess, so I kept it simple.

I made the mold using Allumilite mold compound

      Hope you enjoy
(the main picture is a bit larger being a collage instead of single pictures so it may take a moment for them to load)

That's cool. Totally got the 70s cheapy jiggler look down.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Yes I am having fun! With this last one I ran out of both resin and sculpty. The one thing I am doing when making these is creating ones that do not need a two piece mold. It makes it a lot easier for me and this way I do not have to create a mold box to put the things in so it stays square and then hoping the resin does not leak out once said mold is filled.

I have not tried silicon yet and I know Smooth On makes something called "Dragon Skin" (thanks to an old post here in the forums) that truly would give me a sort of creepy crawler rubber final product

but I have a long way to go. At least I am getting down the basics now

Also curious how actual rubber would react with the Allumilite? I found out the hard way that Allumilite will stick to newer Allumilite if applied to a previous made mold and then trying to peel them apart without damage is sort of futile. I was curious about trying to re-cast some of these actual single dimension jigglers. I do have mold release so maybe giving them a coat of that first? Either way when I feel more daring I might take a swing with one that I have multiples of

Thanks again! I have more ideas, I just need to buy more scuplty and resin

I had to re-do both of these two since the first time around I was half asleep and ended up using double the hardener and virtually no resin- so needless to say they did come out of the molds fairly easily (super stretchy more than goo-ish) but were not even remotely cured, so I had to re-do them both.

ok, up first is a green cast of the monstrosity I made in post #3- The Slimy Slithering Lurking Horror of the Black Swamp". This time around I painted the eyes red and dry brushed on some red, black and green to try and bring out some highlights:

I am also thinking of creating a boardgame and using this guy as the monster

And now we have another original. For this one I am going to call him (or them) "The Tree People". I tried what I could to create a tree like human monster. The head/face is actually a cast of the skull I used for the creature above but pushed inside out. This one I also fully painted. I made the resin a brownish color but the rest I dried brushed on with enamel paint. Hopefully he looks tree-ish and not so much like a dried up raisin or poop.

I can see something like this being bendable with the wire inside and the staples in the rubber

Those are awesome! I was wondering if you might put some wire in them. They look great. I had a red rubber dinosaur like this from a convenience store when I was a kid. Got confiscated in grade 1, but I grabbed it from the teachers board before I left for home. No dime store monster left behind!

Been away for a bit, I love your last sentence!! Thanks for the comments and story! I might make it my new signature

I do have some other ideas in my head, however in this next up coming case it is a sort of kit bashed dime store monster I want to do. I will have to make resin molds of the items first (since it is not something you would destroy) and then cobble together those resin pieces and cover with a new molder to make a new resin thingy--WOOO
