Custom of the Year Award and musings

A few months ago Terry - aka madmarva - dropped me a line with some great suggestions for future customs contests. I've always been a little leery of contests related to Mego customizing, I guess mainly because I don't like the concept of us competing against one another to be 'the best.' That being said, the contests that we have had have gone reasonably well and I'm hoping that we can start a tradition of sorts that recognizes the talented people on this board and their work. So, for 2012 it's on. I do need some help though, as I am struggling with just how to structure this. My initial thoughts were to go with two categories, one for "Megoey" customs and one for the more realistic, detailed pieces. I'm just not sure if that's the best way to go. I don't want to dilute the process too much, but I'm wondering if more categories are in order; ie. Hero, SF, TV, etc. Please chime in, and hopefully we can reach a consensus on categories and take it from there.

I am endlessly amazed and inspired by the artistry I see in this community. My New Year resolution is to get back in the game a bit beyond the polyester and pleather Man Mates stuff I've been doing. Happy Holidays and all of that from me to you guys and gals.

One category could be Original Characters. I don't know if that many customizers create their own original character or not. But I guess they could fall under one of the other categories anyway.

How about a catagory where the figure is made of all Mego parts, or all home made pcs?

              Here are my suggestions:

              1) All "Original" Custom Figure Category - Meaning a custom figure that would look like if Mego would have made it. It should use materials like those that Mego used (i.e. same type of fabric, vinyl. etc.), removable accessories (gloves, boots, shoes, helmets, weapons, etc.), Type 0, I or II bodies and a Megoish vinyl/rubber/plastic head (Mego, LJN, Tomland, AHI, CTVT, CAT well you get the idea but definitely NO resin casted heads here). You can slightly modify head i.e. root hair (or flock) to it but should look like if it was factory made by Mego. Items used to build figure can be repro, original Mego or a mix.

              a) Comic Book character
              b) Movie / TV character
              c) Custom Series or Wave of figures

              2) Mego-Like Custom Figure Category - Meaning a custom figure that has the essentials of a Mego figure (poseable body with cloth/fabric costume). Here you can use any Mego Like body: EMCE, Mattel Retro Action, CTVT, Cast-A-Way Toys, or any body of your own creation & design. Gloves, Boots, Belts, Armors, etc used can be of your own design or repro. Heads can be casted of resin or any other and doesn't have to look Megoish. That means that heads can have artistic rendition sculpting, Alex Ross, Tim Bruckner, etc. or your own realistic sculpting rendition character rendition.

              a) Comic Book character
              b) Movie / TV character
              c) Custom Series or Wave of figures

              3) 9 inch (1:8 scale) Custom Figure category - Made using Famous Covers, Hasbro Signature Series, Matchbox FX, Mego 9", Ideal Action Boy, Mattel Big Jim or any other Mego Like body that would not exceed 10" tall. Made with original or repro items. Should wear a cloth/fabric costume and removable accessories. The more it screams Mego the better...

              a) Comic Book character
              b) Movie / TV character
              c) Custom Series or Wave of figures

              4) 12 inch (1:6) Custom Figure category - same as above except that it would be made using any 1:6 scale body, Sideshow/Hot Toys, DC Direct Deluxe 13”, Medicom, CTVT or Mego. Body should not be taller than 13” (i.e. NO Tonner dolls).

              a) Comic Book character
              b) Movie / TV character
              c) Custom Series or Wave of figures

              Well, something like that…

Make it a vote by the members so there's no questions. Great idea. We're all adults, so no one should have sour grapes.

                    I like the idea/ concept

I like many of the ideas posted so far, The challange would be to get the layout of catagories down.
There would end up being a lot of them.

Might even want to break the heros by marvel and dc
break actors by tv and movies
can even break up the heros by character (like batman related, spiderman relaated etc..)

and then last and most hardest would be to find every thing that was made and posted in 2012

maybe do a vote once a month for each cat. and then once you have a winner for each cat post the whole list

It would almost be like an award show
I personally think the work done here is unbelieveable - and it varies so much from people using just mego parts all the way to people sculpting each part.

so there should be a cats to break these methods up
great idea - but will take some time to work out the buds

Maybe I am making things too simple, but... how about a poll with all the Customs of the Week for the year?

well, that would make it a poll of someone's opinions of what were the customs of the week, right?

I think you did a fine job here. Considering how many customs get posted in a year, I don't think this dilutes the process too much at all.
