    Hawkman - Version 1 Wings

I got a lot of great feedback on what type of wings to use on a Hawkman custom I've been working on. Based on the feedback, I'm going to make two versions - one with flat, sticker detail wings and the other with Dr. Mego 3d foam wings. Here's the version with flat wings with the wings lowered as per suggestions. I'll post pics of the 3d foam wings when the next Hawkman head I ordered from Austin comes in.

I decided to forego the acrylic wings that I used in the discussion thread in favor of craft foam wings. The craft foam is a lot lighter in weight and allowed for easy attachment in the back. The wings are able to move in and out and up and down. This was important for me because I wanted some playability in the wings.

Very cool. Can you show a picture of the back, and how they're attached?

Looks great! I think craft-foam wings are a great idea - light but stiff enough to hold their shape.

I think it looks great, Mike! Love the play value of the retractable wings.

But I am thinking... if the feathers are on a sticker, couldn't you use the sticker to cover up the rivet entirely?

Those are pretty cool. Seeing how Mego did the same thing with the Kiss instruments I'm betting they would've done the same for the wings had they made Hawkman

I punched a hole and put in a small grommet in the ends of the wings where they attach to the body. I then used a small screw through the grommet to attach them to the body. I'll try to get some more pics posted of the attachment system.

Good idea. I actually planned to do just that originally, but the rivet area under the sticker left a bump that I wasn't happy with. After deciding to go the route of the visible rivet, I'm ok with the clunky, "Megoey" feel of it.

Looks good! I do like how you've got them able to fold down when he's not in flight. Also easier to fit him a box with the wing folded down...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

                        That is great. Excellent paintjob.

The complexity of needing to make simplistic, cheap toy wings explains exactly why Hawkman and Angel would never be at the top of the list in the 70's.
