Customizer of the Month - Then and Now

For the month of October we’ll be highlighting the work of Derek Combs, aka Megospidey. We originally interviewed Derek in 2007, and thought it would be interesting to catch back up with him. From now on, COTM posts will run around the middle of the month to allow for some spacing with Megohead of the Month.

Derek’s original interview can be found here: CustoMego

The latest on Derek and his customs can be seen in the following interview, and here's just a taste of what can be found:

EH: Since your original interview in 2007, any new updates on the home/career/personal front? Family addition(s), one millionth parishioner saved, etc?

DC: I suppose the biggest update is my driving and dating 16 year-old -who -thinks-he’s-25-years-old son. He certainly keeps me and my wife hopping. But on the flip side, he scored a 32 on his ACT test the first time taking it as a Junior. Can anyone say free college education? I am still ministering at the same church as I was 4 years ago. No where near my millionth salvation, but that is certainly a worthy goal!

EH: Looking back, your body of work was pretty heavily slanted toward Marvel characters, which isn’t too surprising given your Megospidey handle. However, you’ve been sliding some DC characters into the mix with great results. What finally got [...]

Great read. I find myself looking at your customs often. They're a real inspiration to me. I also like the evolution that your customs have taken.

Oooo I do dig this COTM then and now thing! I'm really loving Derek's Frankenberry too. He's always made cool stuff so it's nice to look back on his work and see how it's progressed through the years. I hope you continue to do the Then and Now thing. Very cool.

Thanks Fred. We'll definitely keep doing these, as well as some of the original format for some of the newer folks who are building a body of work.

For a Marvel guy you sure nailed those DC characters, Derek. Awesome Batmans and Joker

the name is vaguely familiar... is he a newbie?

just kidding, Derek is a true artist and gentleman. I aspire to achieve his level of craftmanship.

Derek is to be admired both on a personal level and as a customizer. His figures are always outstanding and a constant inspiration for my own work. I am fortunate to have him as a peer and a friend. I know he's a Marvel guy, but he was born to make DC customs.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

                        Congratulations, Derek!

I was blessed to get a custom Electro from Derek a few months back and it is an amazing figure. He has since been joined by Sandman with Scorpion and Vulture in the wings. I grew up with that 1970's Romita Spiderman so I am a huge fan Derek's Gwen Stacey, Mary Jane and Peter customs. Thanks to his Electro, I got up the courage to try my hand at painting. I'm not at Derek's skill but the Sandman turned out ok. Next step is taking pictures and posting as I'm having a blast at the Museum.

                        Thanks, Derek!
