As many of you know I am a little interested in "obscure" villains and "obscure" costume variations. Well, okay, I am obsessed with them.
Back when I had my website, reproheads.com, I had an ongoing contest where I would present customs of rarely seen villains and challenge my subscribers to correctly guess who it was and where/when they originally appeared. This custom carries on in that same tradition and would have been included in my contest had I kept the site going.
Back in 1978 The New Adventures of Batman (and Robin) showcased a version of the Riddler never before seen and to never be seen again after the show ended. In fact, this version of the Riddler never even appeared in an episode. Only in the show's openning credits did we get a glimpse of this Riddler in a pinkish-red outfit.

Legend has it that even though he appeared in the credits, Riddler could not appear on the show because he was licensed to the Challenge of the Super Friends series instead (same for Scarecrow).
I found this version and his backstory fascinating and became obsessed with making a custom Mego of him. I used an original Mego Riddler head and repainted the mask. I designed and made the suit making the cuffs the same color as Mego green hands (and not the lighter shade as in the series). DM belt has its buckle painted gray to match the show. I tried to make this as an homage to the recent "variant" trend in action figures today.
My TNAOB Riddler variant and his Crossword Puzzle Gang

Now, his crossword puzzle gang is the icing on the proverbial cake for me. I found the inspiration for these guys on a Micro Heroes site:

Now what makes these guys especially cool to me is that I was able to use 2 different Mattel heads: one from the Mattel Real Men finger puppets ( I think this one was a soccer player) and Mattel's Pulsar (I shrunk this one down a while back but haven't made my Pulsar yet AND since I used the other Mattel Real Men head for my custom Hydro-Man I thought this would work well). So they not only wear the same costume (made by me) but their sculpts are distinctively similar in the Mattel-sculpt-sort-of-way. So they really go together, in my opinion.
Minor changes I would make would be to reduce the size of Riddler's "question mark" and some slight modifications to the gang's suit pattern, but other than that I am very happy with the way these turned out. I hope you like them as well.
As always, "Thanks for looking!"
Peace, Love and Megos,
Austin
