I don't want to offend any of the other customizers, so please do not take offense to this post. However, I do have to say that IMHO, Sandy's customs capture the truest spirit of Mego. I know I have said this before, and I hate to sound redundant, but I look at his custom figures and think to myself that if Mego was still in business today, this is exactly what they would be putting out. Or maybe it would be better to put it this way - If I was president of a current day Mego corporation, this is what I would be selling, as it represents a modern Mego look.

Also, I have to say that, until I cast eyes on Sandy's custom ape lines, I had absolutely ZERO interest in customs. I am not saying they aren't a great thing for the hobby or anything bad about them, just that my interests were not in them. I am a true Mego nostalgia collector. If I didn't play with it when I was a kid, I am not too interested. However, Sandy's customs are the first to prove the exception to that. Yes, some of it is because they are ape figures, but I have seen other custom ape stuff and not been in the least interested. Sandy's love of apes and his vision for them make everything fall into place to capture my attention. I wish I could afford, and had the room to display, all of Sandy's ape customs as I would jump on them in a heartbeat.

Again, this is all my opinion only. I don't want it to sound like I am saying all other customs are bad, just that I have never been interested in them and Sandy's have the style that caught my eye and generated that interest.

You just made my day, Scott. Thanks. I try the best I can to always make my customs the perfect balance of nostalgia and realism. That's honestly the hardest part for me. The actual physical "work" that goes into any of these figures, though meticulous and intense, pales in comparison to the mental anguish I go through in the design process. I'm always fighting that battle between how real I can make something look, and the fact that it's a TOY. You're trying to recreate the magic and wonder of a toy, not reproduce life. I look at figures like the Gorn, Neptunian, and some of the Mad Monsters, and just love the fact that they're very stylized. As a matter of fact, they're some of my favorite figures. I'm always waging the war in my head, as to how far into realism or not to take the sculpts... I think I'll always fight that fight.

That is brilliant. Great idea for a custom. So geeky.

                            Absolutely wonderful.
                            I always wondered:
What would a Planet of the Apes Mego line have been like in 12" ?
We'll never know, but you guys certainly show how far they could have gone in 8".
                            Kudos!
                            Bugler, sound the advance.
