    John Stewart: Green Lantern

Yes folks, the "cat is out of the bag" (No pun intended)

I am the creator of the infamous John Stewart Retro DC custom

It was fairly easy actually. I sculpted the head from some one of the few black guy astronaut rezin heads I got from somebody. Did a little filing and sculpting and came up with the John Stewart head.
The body is a Dr. Mego body and the hands are hands I took off a Retro DC Green Lantern doll (and painted them).
The suit came from the Green Lantern doll (with a touch of flat fabric paint) along with the boots and instant John Stewart.

You'll never see a Retro John Stewart Green Lantern in this life time. There was a reason why they went to do him and then they suddenly dropped him. I have a few guesses but...well....nevermind...

    Here is the custom.

Well, first of all DC/Mattel want to aim at Retro heroes from that era. They already have Hal Jordan. John Stewart was just a blip on the radar back then. He had just put on Hal's ring. Remember the Green Lantern with the funky fro? I think Mattel wanted to stick with one Green Lantern (like Lou said) and keep it that way without five or six guys calling themselves Green Lantern. I think it was a last minute decision even though John Stewart's popularity on the JLU had made him famous, he was just a nobody in the 80s until recently when he got an updated costume and a slick hair cut and became "thee Green Lantern" on the Justice League cartoon.

You could be right, but the fact Mattel initially had him on the wave 1 list still makes me think that somewhere down the line we'll see him again

It's a really tough call. You have to remember this line is called "Retro Action" heroes. John Stewart is not what I picture as a "Retro Action" hero. Right?
That is my guess why the John Stewart idea was yanked.

For about under 30 bucks you can buy a Green Lantern and pop on a black guy head from Dr. Mego along with some touch up on the suit. Pretty easy to do.

Make sure you put the suits on Dr. Mego bodies for the love of GOD!!
I made an Oliver Queen custom out of a Green Arrow figure and the leather jacket is so heavy the wobbly Mattel legs buckled outward as he fell forward from the weight.

Yeah, that "token black guy" remark does sound a bit racist

the head is Kojo from the Marx Safari line. You may have bought it from me although I noticed that everyone seems to be selling him...... It's a pretty nice/handsome head sculpt and great for modifying. Your suits look very nice. I might have to get some when they go on clearance and make some quickie GLs................ Nice job on the suit paints.

I suppose you are right. That could be taken a wrong way. Racist I am not. I hear it all the time on TV on Comedy Central....etc. Honestly, it isn't too easy to find an African American male head. I usually buy the one rezin head of that Astronaut and re sculpt his features.

Yeah. If I want good Rezin heads I only goto Dr. Mego.
The one head I always find is this one. I used it for Cyborg. It has a strong African American feature to him. I have no idea who it is but I have used the head over and over (sanding, sculpting and painting) to change the appearance several times.

Lately I have been going to CTVTs and finding a couple of black guy heads. I have to cut them open and stuff/pack them full with clay so I can paint or add things to the head without the head cracking from caving in.
I made a "soul rag" for Luke Cage's head to give the illusion he is bald (like in the comics). We need a bald black guy head, and no I am not painting a bald Thor black (like someone suggested)

I think I had the link once. Anyone have it? I have a lot of black guys I want to work on but they are starting to look like they are related by using the same head over and over.
