the Red Lantern is Hal Jordan taken over by rage. In the comic the Red Lanterns are opposed to the Green Lanterns, but Jordan on stayed a Red Lantern for about a page in one issue and a couple of pages in the next.

Mainly it's just a cool looking costume.
