ST:TMP Drydock

Hi Everyone! I am a model builder who's into sci-fi modeling mainly, at least for the present. I have many projects on the back burner now but at present I'm working on a scratch-build of the ST:TMP Drydock. I've been churning away at this beast for more than a year now and it is near it's completion. About another month or two to go. It's highly detailed and is being built to the scale of the PL Enterprise model kit. So that makes it 1/350 scale, which means the model is about 4' long. The 8' classic Enterprise you have on the go looks great too. Do those bridge, briefing room, hallway, etc. miniatures fit into the 8' model...or are they part of something else?

Yes, the hanger and the bridge will eventually fit into the final model and will be lit. I've encountered a lot of controversy about being able to view the bridge through the upper dome as seen in ST:TOS The Cage. Some feel that this was just an establishing shot for viewers to get an idea where the bridge actually was on the ship, because on the episode "Where no man has gone befer" the bridge dome is visible from the inside of the ship, if only for 3 or 4 seconds, and it is not transparent. But, this is just a model, so I'm going to do it that way for show anyway. I was also planning to build areas that would be seen through the viewports throughout the ship because the ports would be big enough to see through. I'm sorry to say this project is on hold for now. I'll let everyone know when I pick up on it again, but for now my focus is on the Drydock. Thanks for visiting my site. Keep checking for updates!

That's pretty cool. Maybe as a gag you could take a pic of a Mego Star Trek figure being assembled in dry-dock?

Seriously tho I have tried to build a refit hangar deck model and secondary hull when I was much younger. That's no wasy task when I was using oaktag and printing the details on the cardstock. Yours is made of sturdier stuff by far. I'll have to see where I put the pics and post some sometime.

I've finished adding all of the power modules (84 to be exact) to the upper support rods. These are all mounted on the inside of the frames. On the outsides I've added what appear to be tanks, I guess, of some sort. If you look closely on the flybys of TMP you'll see the Drydock is riddled with hundreds of these tanks all over the structure. Coming up I've begun working on the spindles (560 that I'm aware of) that will connect the structure frames to each other. I've found a unique way as to how to make these with a minimum effort. I think you'll be pleased with my solution. I should have at least one of the sets of 10 done be the end of this coming week. Until then keep checking the site! Thanx!
