    My Rocketeer

This figure is so close to completion, that I debated whether or not to hold off and post this in the "Completed Customs" area. But I am impatient.

I know I am not the first to try this, but I am very happy with the progress. I found an Applause Rocketeer figure at a flea market, and thought the head and rocketpack would be perfect for a Mego custom figure. You can only imagine my disappointment when a Google search later that evening showed me that I was only the last in an apparently long line of people who already figured that out.

But I was not to be dissuaded...

I attached the (dissected) Applause head to a "Ponch" body (for the black-gloved hands) --

...and while I was literally in the process of sewing the jodhpurs, I simply had to set up this shot --

Just for the sake of completion, I include this photo of the rocket pack... AND a set of blueprints! I have yet to decide whether or not I will add a strategically-placed wad of Beemans chewing gum --

Before long, my WIP Rocketeer was able to walk around without complete embarrassment --

I found a wonderful package of brads that seemed perfect for the job (as well as many future projects). After some consideration, I decided to go with the "brass" ones --

However, I initially feared that the jacket was a complete FAIL. I was over-eager in the size of the collar, and I was ready to trash the whole thing and start over --

... However, after setting the entire project aside for several days, I was able to calmly reevaluate the tragedy and consider how to "modify" my existing work as if it had been an "as found" starting point.

    More to follow...

The jacket looks fine, very simple and Mego looking. I used the same base figure and cut the bottom of the helmet out and it fits perfectly over a Mego head.

This is great. Love the character, and the story of his evolution in your custom. I'll be staying tuned.

              Update...

While I was able to shorten the collar, the result (somewhat sloppy) is not up to my normal standard... but I need to press on and bring this project to a state of completion before figuring out what needs to be fixed.

I attached the required 17(!) brads to the bib, one-half of which was sewn onto the jacket, the other half held closed by snaps (Mego-fashion). And then the wait was on to find the right boots -- which came last week as an accessory on an ebay-budget Mego wearing "all the wrong clothes".

Much work remains, but this has reached a point where a new set of WIP photos is merited --

Remaining steps: Design and creation of the "ALICE pack" padding; attachment of the straps; epaulets (YES or NO?); and final attachment of the rocket-pack.

After that... staging a whole bunch of photos with this figure -- hopefully on a day that is not overcast.

Welp, great job so far. Seeing this WIP has inspired me to make my own
Can't wait to see it finished.

That looks awesome! I have been wanting to attempt a custom like this myself. I am wondering, would you consider me paying you to make another jacket and trousers? If so, how much? Feel free to PM me if you like.
                    Looking for:

--Lion Rock "Mr Rock's" shoes/ boots (these may also be the same as the lion rock monster line boots)

                    --Mystery Astronaught

I am tempted to add chewing gum, but I am afraid of messing this up. I have continued to search for a second Applause Rocketeer figure so I can make a second one of these. That one would certainly have chewing gum on it.

If I start a second one of these (which is my plan) I would likely run of more than one more jacket and pants. I have several other custom projects now on the table which are taking my attention.

SentientApe: I here you! The very idea of promising something to anyone at this time, is beyond me. BTW beautiful custom.

MegoCapnMike: Try bleit1701. You will have to wait, but it will be worth it.
