    Head/Headgear Suggestions...

    Hi Mego folks,

I hope I'm posting this in the right section. I'm looking for some heads for Mego-esque customs...And frankly, I'm drawing a blank on where to get them from. I appreciate any suggestions.

    The heads I need:

Magneto with helmet (can be a solid resin cast)

A bald, pointy eared male head (preferably an older/old man, can also be resin).

A male with longer hair and pointy ears? (resin)

Helmets (viking style, preferably with horns)

for Magneto, look for a famous covers one, the heads are undersized for the 9 inch scale bodies they are on. for the two pointy eared guys, maybe get heads with the style you want and add the pointy eared part with epoxy.

      >Magneto with helmet

Someone did a really good one w hile back, but I can't remember who. Hopefully they see this.

      >A bald, pointy eared male head

I ekkp thinking of the Venture Bros.... Orpheus' custom Mego Alchemist. (He rubbed the paint off a Spock head.)

      >A male with longer hair and pointy ears?

      Hmmmm.... that's tough one....

      >for the two pointy eared guys, maybe get heads with the style you want and add the pointy eared part with epoxy

That's probably your best bet. It's an easy mod; especially on a resin head. For a proper vinyl one I'd suggest making them the same as "appliances" for an actor: sculpt them over the ears, but expect them to come off afterwards. Epoxy doesn't always stick so good 'cos vinyl is soft and bending, or expansion/contraction from temperature changes can break the bond. But you CAN superglue 'em back on, and they'll hold pretty good. (Like an actor.)

Viking helmets are tougher, but if you feel ambitious, wrap a head tightly in scotch tape and paper towel, and sculpt the helmet over that. When it hardens you can peel off the tape and towel underneath and it'll fit the head reasonaby well.

I did a search and couldn't find a member named Orpheus or a custom named Alchemist. Do you know when the custom was posted, CTC?

Thank you for the suggestions on the helmet too...I've been considering sculpting one, but my problem is in finding the right material to use. I hate using Sculpy...I used it before and it's always come out crappy, or cracked, etc, etc...

I wish I was better at casting things and was able to cast in plastics...A PVC helmet would be great.

Thanks again, Thunderbolt and CTC. I have a lot to think about.

I would also encourage you to get creative. Look for figures that are close to what you want then try to think of ways to make them exactly what you want using parts from other toys, craft shop stuff, models, bits and pieces of things you wouldn't expect. Scan the finished customs threads for ideas. Often people talk about how they came up with parts, or pieces they used. Any custom is possible, but don't expect to get it perfect on the first try. I've scrapped way more suits and failed parts than I'd care to remember. Also, Magic Sculpt is great stuff. If you want to customize you'll find it's quite handy.

Ugh...Of course the Marx Viking accessories are way bigger than I thought they'd be...Sigh.

Hmmmm...I wonder if the helmet can be shrunk?

                  Hey Dana,
How's about using those little bubble containers from vending machines. They fit on the smaller Mego head types.

Hey folks, any suggestions for a head for Zarak (pics below)? A hulk head? A wicked Witch head?

I've already got most of his outfit and hood ready (outfit below, hood not shown)...

This just came to me...Does anybody know where I can get a bald 8 inch scale Ming the Merciless head, it can be resin (maybe with pointy ears?)? I'm thinking he'll make a great Kelek head...Thanks.

                            Dana

EDIT: Maybe an 8 inch scale Nosferatu head would work? Any of those around?

Okay, one last cry for help and then I'll stop being a pest (I do appreciate the help I have gotten so far, thank you, folks)...Does anybody know if somebody out there casts the old Mego Thor helmet? I really need a helmet to rework into Elkhorn's helmet. I've searched Ebay for options and various other action figures, but I've had no luck. I still am having no luck finding a head for Zarak and a head for Kelek either.

Please folks, I'm begging here...Any suggestions or any kind of input?

                              Dana

BTW: For Elkhorn's helmet, I've even considered buying these viking ducks and cutting the helmet off of one, but I have no idea if it will the right size (they're about 2 1/2 inches tall apparently).
