WiP - First attempt at a fully sculpted character

I'm making a Cheshire Cat and Alice set for a friend, although I'll probably make a second set for myself. Alice will be a Mego, and the cat will be slightly larger than Mego-scale, just because I didn't feel like making him tiny. I've added a few details since then, and baked the clay. I'll post more pics when I have a chance, but here he is so far:

When it's fully assembled, the tail will be holding his ears above his head, like he did at one point in the movie. I'll be casting him in resin and painting him with acrylics.
Hey! Where's the waiter with the water for my daughter?

You'll never know you might be sculpting highly detailed ones in the near future.

Here he is, with the tail and hair added. I cast the head and body as two separate pieces, connected them, and added the hair/ears and tail with Magic-Sculp. I'll be painting him tonight, and I'm hoping to use some short pieces of thin fishing line, dipped in paint, as whiskers. I don't know if you can see them, but I tried to leave little holes for those.

Quick question - I've heard customizers and builders talk about wet sanding to get pieces smooth. How does that work? Because someone recommended doing it before a piece of clay cures, I thought maybe you could use a fine grain sandpaper on unhardened sculpts. While I didn't find much specifically about using the process on clay, Google gave me about a zillion different definitions, ranging from sanding a project under water in a basin to using an expensive tool on auto parts. I'm still scratching my head on how it works in relation to clay and resin projects, so I'd appreciate any pointers.

The cat is painted and finished. He's on the way to his new home with his friend Alice. I'll post pics and a new thread in the Finished Customs forum later on.
