    Mos Eisley? Mos Def.

    Howdy...

Taking a page (well, first few chapters maybe) from MegoScott's book I finally started art conversion for my wretched hive of scum and villainy.
Obviously, I'm using the Sears Cantina Adventure Set art as a style guide and template. There's a TON more art to do and I really just started cutting and pasting... The big challenge will be marrying all the interior art together with the same style since I don't usually do much of this type of illustration.

It's going to be based on a Star Trek Enterprise template.
I've finished all of the exterior wall except 15.25 inches - that's the three exterior panels that surround the transporter module when the playset is open. Those three panels are planned as 1) escaping long-snout Imperial spy (running away behind the stormtrooper), 2) Front Entrance door (opening mechanism same as trek, possibly a different shape), and 3) ... either a) a pair of sitting jawas and a Dewback, or b) a collection of pipes and moisture vap hardware. Haven't decided yet.

The top will have a Star Wars logo with another phrase on it(to be finalized when I lay it out) , positioned where the Trek logo usually is. The two side modules will have mirror image plastic cast dome roof sections with molded in greebles secured to the top. I'm planning on remaking the center bar at the top in a silver tone, with a black carry handle.

Inside, the far left (which would usually be transporter) will be the entrance/droid detection unit. The center will house a U-shaped plastic bar with a pipework/distiller graphic on the wall- the left graphic being back rooms and random aliens, the right a cut in wall section with the Cantina Band... finally the far right module is tentatively scheduled to be the Han/Greedo showdown nook. I originally planned to repro some trek stools as well, but I may just design some fresh or scrap them all together (there's already a lot of hardware for one playset).

The file I'm working with is 9.75 inches high and 36 inches across right now (will be 52 or so when I'm done) - the smaller sample pic here is scaled down to a width of 3. The red guides show where the folds will fall in the final.

And the original file I'm pulling the art from:

I'm trying to come up with some vinyl coated solutions, but it looks like my final build might have to be laminated styrene or very thin MDF with vinyl attachments at the seams for hinges.

    Suggestions/etc always welcome.

Why not buy a blank Dida from Scott and put your own art work in?

I totally would - but the triangular side modules don't seem to measure out to be big enough for what I want to do (gun battle alcove) and I'm kind of married to the idea of the door on the extreme left there with it's own foyer...
I know you can set them up with the wings folding out, but I want more of a sturdy all-in-one pack look, plus the extra space.

I'm thinking unfolding Dida on a battery powered pair of tank treads for my Sandcrawler though... Hmm... (pm'ing him now)

        Another playset, sweet.
        Looking forward to it

Looks really promising! I love that Sears set.

Can you make a diagram of what you want the set to look like? I'm not following that so well, triangular side modules and whatnot.

Oh it's full-on trek set. I just haven't done the art for the other module yet, or added the top flaps, etc, to flesh out the rest of the enterprise template...

You are wanting to use the form factor of the Enterprise playset to use for an interior cantina and showdown playset. Sounds like a grand idea.
Could you possibly mod an existing Enterprise, or are you really wanting to build from the ground up?

Ah cool. Yes, if you are firm on sticking to the Enterprise template I guess your best bet is to make it with styrene or something like that.

I wish there were someway to replace the art inside an Enterprise, but I just don't see how you could do it without destroying it. One possible alternative is something I'm exploring with the Barbie Plane, printing your art at a sign shop on a large vinyl sticker and applying that on top of the Enterprise vinyl. That could be cool, but of course wouldn't have the art under clear vinyl look.

I've got a few new configurations for sidewings on Didas I can show you, but I know the black flaps bug you.

Oooh, you know I hadn't even thought of a sign shop solution... I was kind of toying with printed vinyl as an idea, similar to the Fighting Furies Sea Fury set, right? Sign shop is a great suggestion...
If one were really careful about the wrap art and margins, I guess it could even be printed with a bleed border at the panel edges which could then fold over onto the other side and then tuck under the reverse side's sticker at the edge to make a finished edge. This could be applied to a stiff plastic cardstock or similar material core template for what would become basically a printed coating. I have to look into that...

Since I posted the other image I made a quick inkjet mock-up of the Stormtrooper standee I planned on doing... I'll change the shoulder pauldron color for the final, and I also wanted to do a few droid designs the same way. (it's double-sided art, just reversed on back)

I'd like to see the new Dida config - is there a way that the flaps could be connected on the interior instead of wrapping over, or is that an unstable configuration?

Awesome idea. I can't wait to see what it looks like when completed.

What I'm liking about applying the sticker on an old set is you can retain the surface softness of the vinyl and you can even retain the sealed edge look if you work the sticker into the groove and then cut the excess with an exacto, you can get the rounded corners and the sealed line edge.

There's no way to put the dida flaps on the inside, it screws up the dimensions, won't fit. But I've been thinking more about the problem. If you removed the chipboard inside the flap then you'd relax the vinyl pocket enough that you might have room to insert a strip of art. Then you could either replace the cardboard or even just rivet/snap together with unsupported vinyl, it'll probably be fine.

I'll post a couple diagrams with other configs in a bit.

About a minute into this video--you can see the sticker following the sealed edge nicely.

                            Hey Tothiro,

Here's that other configuration I was talking about. It stitches 2 of the triangular floor pieces together to make an angled rectangular room.

There are other options to make a square room....these all use my tribox parts in one way or another.

However---if you've been planning on the Enterprise as your model, this will really add a lot more real estate you have to cover, your art would go from 52 inches wide to 72, maybe 92, something like that. That's a lot of new art you'd have to generate.

That seems like pretty nice coverage...
I would guess that shops limitations would be pretty standard for what's available, since most shops would run on similar hardware... do they have an online page with spec info? I'm just curious if there is a range of vinyl gauges/thicknesses available for printing, or if it is basically one size (thickness) fits all... And about the dimensions, IE how large can they print in square inches?
