    TMP Iron Man

I never was much of an Iron Man fan as a kid... although I owned a Mego Iron Man figure back in the day, I didn't really know much about him. But then I saw the Robert Downey Jr. flick, and like the rest of America, I fell in love with the character. So I decided to build my own custom of the movie Iron Man.

Sorry, I know the pics aren't the greatest (the flash really washed out the one side of the helmet) but I have been pretty happy with how things are coming together, and wanted to share...

I'd love your feedback, suggestions, and criticism.

Obviously I need to figure out the bodysuit and some gloves, but I think once I have those in place, it should all come together pretty quickly. Here I just kind of put the pieces in place enough to help visualize what the finished product (try to ignore the ugly yellow belt),

A big thanks to Captain for recommending the customizing potential of Iron Man Mega Bloks.

Also, I was very inspired by darklord1967's efforts to build a better RC Batman. His gorgeous Batman cowl convinced me I could make a decent removable helmet from Pez Iron Man.

Fun story on the paints, too... but I will save that for another post.

Great to see the 8" figure parts mego-ized. I've been wondering how best to do this myself.

Thanks for all the encouragement, guys.

So, here is the promised story on the paints...

I needed to paint the head and the boots, and couldn't come up with a good paint. I could find paints that matched the color, but I wanted something that had a little bit of sparkle... more the look of a car paint than a traditional acrylic paint. After trying a few options without much luck, my wife said, "Hey, would this work?" She handed me a bottle of nail polish.

Well, I was skeptical, but wouldn't you know... the nail polish worked like a champ! Kind of a different medium to work with than traditional paints, but once I got the hang of it, it was perfect. And the nail polish sealer provided a *way* better protective coating than varnish. I was very worried about painted boots holding up against wear and tear, but... knock on wood... they have seemed pretty bulletproof so far.

I don't know, maybe this is a well known trick already... but I had never heard of it before. So I told my wife I would share her great nail polish idea with you guys, and she could become famous in the Mego community.

Looks great sir! Really nice. I have the parts sitting here, along with some HALO pieces, but havent done anything with them yet.

Neat idea using nail polish. It has the right metallic sheen to it, that the movie IM armor has.

                        Cant wait to see more!!!

Is the I.M. helmet from a Pez? I have been working on a Tony Stark figure and can't quite get the helmet to fit over the Ivanhoe head. Thx for posting the pix and the Nail polish tip! I've come across the same red paint problem.

Also, you might want to experiment with a Zica body.
If a Mego figure of God did not exist, it would be necessary for EMCE to invent him.

Wow, that looks like it's going to be an awesome custom. You should send a pic to Hasbro when you're finished! Maybe it'll get their gears moving.
