His head is not huge, I think it will look fine once you put the clothes on and paint him. right now your eyes are drawn to the hat as part of his head. With some paint it will be fine.

And like a bad rash...he's back. On the burner. I will make that Mego scale working umbrella...just have to cobble the pieces and just make my Pengy the craziest one ever. It's crappy that now I've got the right sized body the head is overly huge....but I guess I don't want to bother trying to shrink him...too much work. I don't know yet. It may bug me enough and I'm sure it will.

    here's how to make one.

Guess it could be converted to any scale.

I like the folded umbrella accessory that came with 9" Laurel & Hardy figures.

It's in scale for vintage Penguin; I use an original, but Doc offers a resin repro.

The drink umbrella is something I've looked into for MY custom MEGO Penguin.

Believe me, it will NOT work. Here's why:

    1) The scale of these things is not appropriate for a 9.5 scaled MEGO figure (too small), so The Penguin ends up looking like he is holding a child's umbrella.

    2) These umbrellas are NOT designed to stay in a fully opened position. With no locking mechanism, they only stay about 3/4 open to hang on the edge of a glass.

    3) Most drink umbrellas I've seen are inappropriate in STYLE since they look more like carribean sun umbrellas / parisols (with a flatter open profile and smaller wedge panels (but more of them). The Penguin's umbrella should be more of a formal dress umbrella... large, with a slight curvature to its open profile, and larger wedge panels, but less of them.

    4) The little wooden sticks that these umbrella are made of tend to look lousy next to a MEGO figure. The coarse texture is all wrong (even if painted).

No, I'm afraid that some enterprising artist out there will just have to engineer a working umbrella in this MEGO scale.

That looks fantastic. I love the sculpt for the umbrella, but I have been thinking about your idea of a "working" umbrella. How close is a drink umbrella to Mego scale? I'm not really an "umbrella drink" guy, but I happened to see one on TV earlier today and thought... "I wonder if that would work for Jess's Penguin." (Yes, that was about the same time I realized I am a Museum addict...)
