    Mego Head Likeness - Opinions

As this project doesn't involved anybody on this board I would really like your frank opinion on the following. First is the picture of the person, second is the sculpt, third is painted head, fourth is with hair.

The initial sculpt looks pretty good to me. However, the likeness
seemed to lose something once it was painted. I can't say what or why. I
assumed at the time it needed some hair. But now with hair it looks even
less like her to me. What specifically could help this project? I'm rather disappointed as is.

I think she looks fine, the first pic of the head with no paint or hair had the most likeness though

      I remember this !
The Sculpt does Bare likeness to the character. I think the paints can be painted to Her Likeness,.. You Might Need this Guy.

Its hard to tell exact proportions based on the picture, but it seems to me that the eyes are too high on the head. Eyes are almost always near the middle of the head, yours are closer to the top 1/3. Hair can throw that look off, which may be why the sculpt looks better without hair. It appears to be more evident with paint and even more so with the hair.

Drawing techniques tend to transfer well to sculpting. Here is an example

            Now, overlaid with your sculpt...

            Hope that is helpful.

              Personally?

I think the sculpt---great as it is---misses on the specific likeness
primarily because it seems to have spread the face and the
facial features more than it should be for the girl it's based on.

Its something I see quite a bit in doll headsculpts
and is most apparent in the BRIDGE of the nose
---its almost like scuptors realize too late that
they've made the head too wide where the
facial features are and THEN have to compensate
for that by slightly widening the facial features (nose, mouth, eyes etc.)

So yeah a narrower head--particularly where the facial features are
(with a more pronounced narrowing at that girls' chin)
might've helped---in my amatuer opinion anyway.

Regardless of starting from scratch----redoing paint jobs
and hairstyles seems to be a great way to manipulate
              the look of doll heads.

I can hear a director on a stage set shouting out : "HAIR! MAKEUP!"
(Cause ya gotta think---that's really what that is in "doll terms"
and it works wonders in BOTH scenarios!)

i think the face would look fine if there were more forehead. The features are proportionate in relation to each other (nose is a bit big) but the girl has a lot taller forehead than the sculpt does. And she could use a different paint job.

No but the person isn't interested in doing such small heads again.

                        Hmmmm....

It's remarkably good; but the actual person has a certain cartooniness to them that doesn't translate so good to a realistic sculpt. For a more accurate head it should maybe be a bit thinner, with more narrow and angular features, (eyes, nose and mouth) and a more pronounced chin.

Paint-wise, since the pic is taken at a high brightness it washes some surface detail out. The figure is again painted very realisticly; which is different from the pic. Paint it in solid colours. (with minimal hilighting) Pastels would be your best bet, or maybe slightly washed out paints.

Why do the whole thing over again? Earlier I had suggested using a Dinah-Mite head, but looking at the picture again, I think the CTVT Cindy Brady head would be a good match. All you would have to do is switch bodies and brush out the pigtails. It's already done. CB's head has a neckplug though, so you would have to use a different torso. Or just get the body that Doc Mego is selling now, they're made for that kind of head.

This is a beautiful sculpt, No doubt about it.

But to my eyes, the nose should definitely have been narrower. And the lower lip should have been thinner as well. The girl in the reference photo seems to have finer features than that.

Plus, I suspect that the photo of the painted sculpt was done with a wide-angle lens up close to the subject which roundly distorted the look of the face a bit.

Phantom will all due respect this project is not about finding a generic looking head and sticking it on a body. It is attempting to make, as realistic as possible, a doll that looks like the subject at hand.
