    Capes?

What does everyone make their capes out of? I've tried using the lightweight nylon like the original figures, but I'm not really happy with them. Do you just use the same spandex that you make the suit from or something else?

I usually make mine for silk or satin fabrics, as long as they're not too shiney. I've also heard of them being made out of thin vinyl - I think they call it "raw" vinyl, no cloth backing or anything like that. There have also been some turn up that someone cut a cap out of a piece of a beachball that looked pretty good.

I'm a sucker for my "What Would Mego Do?" custom's capes to look like my old toys,
so I always prefer getting nylon from my customizers----but---hey---capes can look
good with all types of materials---still, I have to ask ---isn't vinyl tough though
because it doesn't have any real "give"---giving a cape an overly "stiff" appearance?

I make made my first one out of an inexpensive vinyl shower curtain. I picked the closest color to match, made a pattern from the original cape and cut the cape out of the vinyl. Pretty simple and inexpensive way to make capes IMO. The shower curtain is like a 70"x72" so just imagine how many capes one can net from it.

p.s. In the background for those that may be wondering is my Crime Fighting BatVan custom that I am toying around with. It is pretty basic right now. I am by no means any custom god as you can see. This one (once complete) will CRUSH the evil villians right in their tracks.

I have been experimenting with vinyl and have found that there are many different thicknesses. Some vinyl can be stiff. The one that I chose seems to work perfect and has plenty of give for a cape IMO.

I use to use a silky Material....but now I use the same Spandex as the Costume, and it looks MUCH better. It drapes over the Body better.

I also have a non-sewing method...I trace it with Fabric, smooth it out with My Finger...let it dry, then cut it out. NO sewing!

I have used the cheap shower curtains and also the disposable table cloths. They are easy to cut and you can get a zillion for a buck. If you like vinyl look for "rainjacket material" Jo Annes used to carry it in solid colors but now they only have the translucent stuff. I like it for the simplicity. It is great for the Lily Ledy capes. It looks almost identical. It came in yellow, red, navy, and dark green when I used to get it here. If anyone finds any locally let me know as I'm starting to run out and there's none in this area any more.

I try to only use "kite" material like the original capes were made out of. It comes in almost any color you can imagine. Just be careful of the edges fraying. Use super glue on a toothpick around the edge or "no fray". Find that at Jo Ann's.

Pat Catan's has this great craft fabric that works great. Not a great choice of colors though, always a catch. It comes in black white blue red and gold. Its a little thicker than mego material but it works okay.

My personel cape is made out of an old burlap sack tied with a bungie cord I found in a parking lot.

My customs use the same material as used in the suit so the colors match. I agree with type3. I hem the edge and insert a fine wire for better posing. I am still having trouble making hoods that look right. Especially Spectre with that point at the front.
