    "Real" chainmail

Anybody ever attempt giving their knights "real" metal chainmail?

I'm making a custom, a gladiator actually, and I wanted to give him the classic look of "one arm in chainmail".
Not easy at such a small scale...

At a small scale it could be tricky. Definitely not impossible, but fine gauge wire is needed, and the links will be tiny.

I have been using costume grade jewelry chain from Hobby Lobby's jewelry department for custom projects and have been very pleased with the results.

Their necklace & bracelet chains are between $3 and $12 depending on length and size of links. Their spools of bulk chain are between $10 and $12.

        Here's a great tutorial: http://www.onesixthknights.com/chainmail-tutorial/

You can also buy pre-made chainmail in different sizes here: http://theringlord.com/cart/

I'm lazy, so I use a silver and black mesh material that looks like 1/6 scale chainmail from a couple feet away. Saw it a few years ago in a fabric store and bought a yard just in case I'd ever need it and have used it a couple times now. Here's a link: http://www.heathcoatfabrics-online.c...500-R05-999918 I don't sew, so I "sew" it by weaving silver elastic between the loops under the arms and down the sides.

That fabric actually looks pretty good, I think I'll give that a try. I'm guessing that real metal links won't work well in such a small scale, they'll never follow the curves of small things like action figures.

They also make it in a gold/black combo. I prefer the silver/black, but bought some of the gold just in case.

Here's a tip, if you're lazy like me: a lot of the time, chainmail shirts have leather or heavy material at the ends of the sleeves and at the bottom of the shirt (I guess to protect the wearer from pinching)--I just cut some brown duct tape into thin strips and folded it over the material, "hemming" it with that. Looks great.

I remember seeing a custom figure that had a tunic knit from a type of wool that looked just like chain-mail. I seem to think it was an Aragon custom. I'm interested in thr options as well as I am in the process of updating my knights.

Guys, just wanted to show you real quick what that chainmail material looked like on my Conan kitbash, so you could get an idea of its scale.

Yeah, that material works great for chainmail. Cool figure.

                          That is ultra cool!

Is that fabric only available in the UK? I haven't had any luck finding it in the States.

Thanks for the compliments, guys--he still needs a lot of work. Grimjohn, I actually bought that material at a Jo-Ann fabric store here in Missouri a few years back. I found something that looks kind of similar on their website, but I can't really tell if it's the same stuff from just a picture.
