    Wooden mego heads?

So, I love heads---really my favorite part of the hobby---, but I really can't sculpt so much. I mean, I've tried sculpey, milliput and even just scratching at pre-cast resin heads with a sharp implement. Not so much.

Then I saw this drawing in a kid's art book by Jay Stephens:

The shape of his head is so flat, I figured it could be done from a piece of wood. Like a rectangular dowel. I use a lot of stuff like that for contraptions. So, I made this:

Not perfect, but it turned out pretty well. I used craftfoam for the fins and some of the details. Still needs work on paint and eyes.

Since I've been doing Ben 10, I've been trying to figure out what to do for some of these heads. Some are really weird shaped.

You can't so much tell from this pic, but his head is really flat and heart shaped. I figured that would be another great head to do from wood.

I'm hoping varnish will smooth out some of the rougher spots and give it a "plastic" look.

So, its pretty much been craftfoam and wood, but I was thinking maybe I need to use a sculpting medium that you take off some of (like wood) instead of additive (like clay or whatever) I guess if you rolled out clay or something it would be like craftfoam. Just thinking.

    Any thoughts?

That is a great start at sculpting. I will admit I take shortcuts. Trying using a Mego head. I usually fill them in with clay so I can then add parts onto a solid head. I used to do JLU so the heads are solid. Using wood is a way to start just like how I started out on the JLU. Keep it up.
