Just a thought, but one of those button/pin making machines could be used to make shields in different sizes, and they look more like metal than plastic, and the pin on the back could probably be modified into a handle or strap.

Great suggestions. I know the title is "Good Replacement", so I'm not sure if these two ideas are workable for anyone. Although I have both stored away somewhere, I've yet to compare the scale to see if they are compatible.
ToyBiz capt. A model kit shield.
Marx capt. A shield removed from figure. (I used the hard red plastic repro from Mexico.)
        Both would need painting.

That is EXACTLY what I plan on trying for my WIP custom Captain.

While sitting in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" on its opening day, instead of completely losing myself in the movie, I spent a lot of time analyzing and deconstructing Cap's "Stealth" suit in a sudden plan to clothe my naked Mego Captain Ameica figure. The shield idea came to me in a flash -- why not simply use one of those dozens of 3" button/badge blanks I already own? With a diameter of 3", the (metal!) disk is only slightly larger than the true 1:9 size (2.88"). Plus: METAL (albeit steel and not vibranium).

I will certainly create a "Custom WIP" thread for this when I begin actual construction.

Just to futher elaborate on this (pending its own thread) -- you can either use the existing badge face disk (but you have to turn under the lip), or -- and this is my plan -- actually make the entire button/badge as a shield. The full-button would be thicker than desired, but I plan to slip leather loops through both pin holes (omitting the pin), which will work as armholds. The hold-up on this project is I want to very carefully paint the face of the badge, then distress (scrape, etc.) the paint to simulate battle-damage and expose the underlying metal. This requires some good masking templates (already on it) and a lot of patience. And a lot of blanks for trial-and-error (and I have a whole lot of them!).

One last brilliant idea -- my plan includes a screen-accurate(?) harness, which includes a rare-earth magnet (again - I have a large supply of these) to match the RE magnet attached to the underside of the shield. This would permit a very satisfying slap-the-shield-on-his-back-and-it-attaches action, just like in the movie.

If this works, and is not too difficult to replicate, I might make a whole bunch of these.

Other Thread started. Now I have to make one.

While sitting in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" on its opening day, instead of completely losing myself in the movie like the rest of the audience, I spent a lot of time analyzing and deconstructing Cap's "Stealth" suit in a sudden and completely unnecessary plan to clothe my naked Mego Captain
