Can you RIT dye the CTVT bodies??

    Hi All -

I have a few CTVT bodies from 2-3 years ago -

Can they take RIT dye? Also, how long do you dye them for? Last time i tried I ruined the plastic chest pieces (They warped from the heat!)

I cant speak for the CTVT bodies, but the chest and waist/ crotch plastic on Doc Mego' bodies (the hard plastic) can take RIT powder dye (not sure about the liquid). The water does not need to be at a rapid boil. In fact, when I did my bodies, the water was just hot and not boiling. I put a metal strainer in to keep them off the bottom of the pot, and just try to keep them moving around. To get the more durable plastic to accept the color you may need to add acetone (hardware store) to the water. Be careful as it can spit out the pot while pouring in. Here is an excellent video showing the process. This is taking white plastic to black.

One thing of note is that the pins might take longer to accept the color, and any part not showing (like the plastic hidden by the elbow, foot, hand, knee joints) will not get colored. You would think the water could get through but cannot. Best results are to disassemble the entire figure for the dye to reach all areas.
You cant dye a red body to blue, or green body to red.

I've been checking out these videos to figure out how to dye the Doc Mego Hulk body. The tricky part is the torso is a different plastic than the arms and legs, and I'm going for a caucasian flesh color as opposed to a solid green or black or something that you can just buy pre-made, so I'll have to mix the color I want. Anyway, one of these days, I just have to bite the bullet and give it a shot.

The CTVT bodies are a different animal however.
Expectation is the death of discovery.

What about painting the Doc Hulk body? I haveny Painted the whole body but the hands take the flesh tone paints very well.

Maybe. The guys I'm making don't wear a lot of clothes, so I would have to paint the whole thing. If I were to paint it, I think I would want to spray paint it, or airbrush it, and I don't have a set up for that. I can't imagine brush painting the joints would work very well.

            Hmmmm....

Dyeing plastic is tricky. The CTVT stuff will SORT OF take dye, but it'll be really light because the dye doesn't soak in like it's supposed to. Doc bod arms and legs can be dyed fairly well 'cos they're a softer vinyl, which absorbs the dye. The plastic on the Doc torsos is rigid and doesn't dye so good.... like the CTVT stuff. The rigid Doc stuff takes paint pretty well, although you might want to rough it up a bit with fine sandpaper first, for better adhesion. The CTVT plastic is slicker (I've heard it referred to as a "self oiling plastic") like original Mego bodies, and doesn't take paint as well. If you do paint the slicker stuff, it won't hold up to any level of play; even if you seal it.

If I were you, I would simply buy one of their color casted/molded bodies... Faster & cheaper!
