Thanks, Dave. I burnt my finger a couple times on melting plastic hair, but its worth it.

I just tried that thread method with a Mego head I'm working on. It took some time to get used to it and kind of work out a rhythm, but once I got used to it, that was WAY faster.

I don't understand how you can use an existinng head--doesn't taking out the original hair destroy the scalp?

Thor/Glinda for example have that peg-hole, and if you'd try to re-do an Inv. Girl for example, reworking her part would leave barely any vinyl to re-root..

        What am I missing?

^^It's possible to damage the vinyl heads, but not unavoidable. The part is usually the biggest risk for me, you're right about that. You just have to be very gentle. I use blunt-ended tweezers, as opposed to scissors, to scrape the hair from the inside of the head. Another thing that helps is to heat water in the microwave(not boiling) and dip the head in to soften the vinyl before you start hair removal. I've repaired some torn scalps using thin fishing line and extra hair. I have them on my Facebook page, but if you're not on FB I'll try and get you a link.
I don't recall Glinda having a peg hole, but the only one I ever rerooted was for Ma Hunkel and I didn't fill the hair in completely. I completed a Thor for EMCE Hammer and I had to be careful, but it turned out ok. At one point, I think I inserted the hair from the top/outside of the head instead of through the neck.

^^ So you go thru the bottom up into the scalp? I go down thru the scalp out the neck hole. I prefer to use previously unrooted heads.

Yeah, I usually thread the hair, put the needle into the neck hole, then pull it through the head. I've done it both ways - I guess it doesn't really matter. There might have been a reason why I started doing it that way, but right now I can't recall. Now, if I'm using curlier hair I go from the outside in, so the hair doesn't have to be pulled so far through the scalp. With some kinds of hair, it frizzes easily and that helps reduce that. That thread method will be helpful there too.

Tbolt, where do you get unrooted heads? I would like to keep a few on hand.

FC Spidergirl is the one in the pic, the Wolverine Evolution was the one used for my Thor. they have glued on molded hair that I peeled off. A lot of heads are cast with the hair part thicker and can be dremmeled down a bit to make bald heads.

I have a small crochet hook that I use to reach up inside the head and pull the hair out (after I cut it close to the scalp). Once that is done, if there are any stray strands that are stubborn I use tweezers or artery forceps (don't even ask where I got those!) to pull the rest out. For re-rooting, I made a custom punch tool like the ones you can buy and re-root usually using the same holes if I can. I haven't had any issues with part-lines yet. I double over all the strands and push them into the head about 1/8" or so. The I glue it from the inside using Silicone RTV in a can with one of those "Redi-Whip" type nozzles and push all the glue around inside the head with a chop-stick to make sure it adhere to all hair. The glue is super tough, flexible and water proof so I can do the boiling water treatment on the hair with no worries that it will loosen the glue. It saves time too over knotting or melting each hair plug. I did that once and it was just too tedious and time consuming. The Silicon glue has never failed me. Oh, the re-rooting tool I made is nothing more than a large wooden dowel and sewing needle that I cut at an angle with my Dremel. I can ususally knock out a full re-root in about an hour and a half or so, not counting the dry time for the glue.

need to cut it and get it to lay down better, but it is not too hard to do and not all that time consuming. This was my second one and I got it done quicher than the last. She has a big hole in the back of the head where the plastic hair was mounted, I filled that with a braided pony tail that will show up when I give her an Amazon Warrior haircut.
The head is Toybiz Spider-girl, what is the body that you use? From the same figure? It turned out great!

You mean you're amazed at our dedication to doll hair?
It's an odd thing to talk about outside of toy and customizing circles. "So what did you do this weekend?". I pulled the hair out of a doll head and used a needle to put a different color in. You get some funny looks.
