    Questions

I have some questions about paint and resin kits.Which is the best paint to use when painting a resin head, enamel or acrylic?I want to try my hand on making resin parts for some of my customs.Where should I look on the internet for a starter kit that has the resin, mold release, etc. and about how much should I spend for the kit? After painting a head what's the best sealer to use?Are there any instructional videos out there that shows how to use resin?I wish I could sculpt heads like some of the talented people on this site but I don't have the knowledge to do it.Thanks for any help that anybody can give me and I hope my resin making turns out good.

Everything I've heard is that the best paint to use is acrylic for resign heads. I personally use a matte clear coat spray over the heads I paint but that's me and I'm NOT an expert in that area as some others around here are.

I wish I could sculpt too, those on the forum that do I tip my hat to.

      >Which is the best paint to use when painting a resin head, enamel or acrylic?

Acrylics; MUCH easier to use, and much easier to do stuff like washes with. I prime mine as well. I prefer sandable autobody primer. Good bite, durable, but it's harsh and you gotta use a couple of light coats with it.

      >Where should I look on the internet for a starter kit that has the resin, mold release, etc. and about how much should I spend for the kit?

People like Smooth-On stuff. I get mine form a place called 3D Plastics in Alberta. I prefer EasyFlo resin, and GI1000 silicone. Both are pretty forgiving. For a starter set you're probably looking at $50 to $100 bucks, depending on how much you're doing. Start small; the materials will only keep for a year or so. Less, if you live somewhere humid.

      >After painting a head what's the best sealer to use?

I like Testors. Gloss protects better than mat, but i's all shiney and even a coat of mat afterwards doesn't completely remove the shine. (But that's your best combo if they're gonna get played with.)

      >Are there any instructional videos out there that shows how to use resin?

Check out some of the garage kit sites online.... not that I can name any, but there are a bunch. (Try a search of "garage kit how to" on the youtube.) The disciplines of garage kit making and Mego customizing have a lot of voerlap.

I use acyrlics and primer. The primer I use I get from a hobby shop(gameswork shop or the like) It's designed to be used on plastic minatures 15mm-28mm scale and is very fine.
One light coat usually is enough and no blemishes or sanding needed. Then paint with acrylics and coat with a matte finish on face and hair.
I like a gloss coat on eyes and lips maybe the hair if you want it to shine.

As for resins I can't say I leave that for the pros.
