Bring'em Back from the dead! How to fix a trashed box

Have you ever spent years looking for that one rare and elusive piece and when you find it, it looks like this?:

Well never fear it can be saved with a little work. I don't recommend heavy repairs except in extreme circumstance like this. Always do the least possible is my moto. The top of box is torn down middle, as are the front, and plastic window. In case like this it's better to carefully open at glue line on side of box. This one fell apart due to water damage.

STEP #1 Clean box with a papertowel to remove 40 years of dust. gently rub paper towl over surface. dust gets in the way of the glue. Small pieces may break off save them.

STEP #2 Remove loose plastic window and carefully lay out box flat on table and put heavy books on top to flatten out all the wrinkles. Can take a day or 2.( I used 2 stacks of books , pic shows one stack.)

STEP #3 Take Tacky Glue and a tooth pic and gently dab glue on tears and repair. For really badly damaged seams on the sides I glue in strips of
cardboard to add stability and strength. The top of the box had a tear across several folds so I used paper tape to reinforce after glue dried. Wait for box glue to dry before doing next steps.

Step#4 Glue in plastic window piece. You can get acetate at art supply stores or if the window is small you can use the plastic from a clear report folder from a Office Supply store. I run glue stick around window's inner edge, then add a small bead of cement about a 1/4-1/2 inch from edge. It will spread when you put plastic down. Less glue is best. Carefully put down a sheet off paper over clear window then put books on again. Wait till it dries then carefully remove books and reglue paper seam on side of box.
Step #5 The inner card with accessories also had warped so I put the inner card under the books too! Put inner card in box with acessories
TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA your done! This works on most Mego type boxes.

        Great stuff.

I have some larger, playset boxes that have begun to to bow. I wonder if I could reinfroce some them from the inside without adding so much weight to worsen the bowing.

I have made thick cardboard inserts to put inside boxes to get them to display better(No glueing needed). Measure the sides and make 1/16-2/16 smaller so it fits inside. Kind of a window frame in design

I have also stuffed boxes with wadded pieces of paper to get them to go back into shape, they display better, and sometimes keep the new shape.
