    Composite Superman

Ok, I wasn't going to show this guy yet, but according to the Post Office, he's been delivered to his new home. So since I haven't seen the recipient post anything about it yet, I have to cave and post a pic of him.

The head is a grey and nearly rock-hard Superman, with the cowl sculpted on from Sculpey Bake-N-Bend. The first couple times I worked on this, I tried to make the head by cutting a Batman head in half and attaching it to the Superman. That didn't work at all. So I tried to get the sculpted cowl as close to the original Mego version as possible. The Batman side of the suit is made from half of an original outfit, with a plastic belt I made. The Superman side is sewn by me, with the underpants painted on and a piece of elastic for the belt. Both parts of the cape were traced from originals and edged with Fray-Check. The boots, glove, and stickers are all repros. Oh, and I found something that helps a lot when you have to paint hands. I removed the hand/wrist and sanded the joint with some fine sandpaper - not too much, just enough to keep the surfaces from rubbing and still leave room for primer and paint.
Hey! Where's the waiter with the water for my daughter?

Okay...ignorant question here, as I'm not familiar with the composite characters at all, but why is the head and right hand green colored?

      Also:

      Sculpey Bake-N-Bend
How interesting! I've never heard of this stuff. Is it readily available? Easy to use?

The figure came out great and I can't imagine how hard it is to essentially join two halves of a figure. Wonderful!

Both hands are green colored, you just can't see it under the glove
Honestly, I have no idea what's with the green color. That's just how they made him in the comics.

I buy Sculpey Bake-N-Bend at the craft store, it's right by the regular Sculpey, Premo, etc clays that have to be cured. It's used basically the same, but it's a little harder to paint. I only had black, so I had to use several coats of primer to get the blue to stick. Once cured, it has a rubbery feel to it. You're better off if you can buy/mix the color you need. It doesn't sand the best either. It's not great for intricate detail, but it's nice for ponytails, horns, bat-ears, or other parts that could break off easily. So far, I've only found it in multi-packs with 5 or so colors for between $5 and $7. I'd love to get single packs of just one color.

          Thanks!

Nice job. At first glance, I did not detect the sculpted cowl. I thought you had merged two of the heads together.

Nice work. The Composite Superman has always been a favorite of mine. His skin is green because Brainic 5's skin is green. He has all of the powers of the Legion of Superheros. One the few SuperVillians that could beat any hero from DC or Marvel.

                        Nice work!!

I've been wondering how to pull off the head myself. I was thinking of cutting a mask in half too, but your idea sounds way better.

As for the green color---Composite Superman is in reality Joe Meach, a janitor at the Superman museum (this was back in the silver age when the only thing Superman didnt have was a steak house). One night a lightning strike hit Joe while he was standing near a group of statues of the Legion of Superheroes. Unbeknowst to all, when the Legion made the statues the copier device imbued the statues with their powers, thus Joe now had all of the powers of the Legion. His green skin came from Braniac 5. Joe snapped and turned back to crime (I believe he was on parol). Using Chameleon Boys powers he created the half Bats/Supes look because they brought him to justice before and were now his hated enemies. In the first story (a two parter no less) he also turned himself into the Batmobile, and a rather goofily dressed copy of a Joker statue Batman had in the Batcave.

Of course, in the modern age of comics, I'm sure this origin has been reworked a dozen times?

Very cool custom once again! I never read any comics with him in it (remember I'm mostly a Marvel head), but I loved looking at pictures of him! You captured him great-like I must say!
