Those look so neat, I have a Batcombputer idea...

Scott, what does the display do--scroll? What is depicted?
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSM0f5W_Lh4 Processing is taking forever....

Here's a little video if the thing in action. It has a round glass window in front of a piece of plastic that's printed black and the letters are clear. Then the cylinder has a pattern printed on it of black and green and orange. When the cylinder spins the colors "illuminate" the clear letters. The letters say Barbie, Skipper, Ken, and Mattell (which is kind of a giveaway it's not a knock-off, duh...)

So I dremeled my way through it. The base actually has a function to support the spinner, see the little arm that sticks up on the part I cut out. It holds the axel. Not sure the spinning can be preserved. It's one thing to put the arm back, but now I also need to get that screen with the letters off so I can replace it. When all is said and done the spinner may not survive. Sticking an LED in it will work much better anyway, but there is something charming and clever about the way they faked text typing on the screen.

Cool, well, the screen actually popped of it's little posts very easily. It's great.

The one I am experimenting on had a bad spinner to begin with so I just ripped the guts out. We'll see on the next one if it's salvageable once you pull off the bottom.

Getting the pink face off of it is a bear! It's not glued in, but it's so tightly engineered. I'd like to take it out to spray paint it, but maybe masking it in place is the way to go. See that little piece of foam? The keyboard is pushes up and down, backed by the foam. Very nifty. And the "escape" button actually stops the spinner, that's what the little grey arm is in this picture.

Remember this? Here's the final product...I printed a new screen on a transparency and the light is a green LED keychain light that sits in a hole in the desk top. So I couldn't save the motorized guts but it's still totally awesome. Desk and stool by Lasermego, natch.

                      That is seriously cool, man.
As it happens, I just picked up a bunch of the McFarlane Lost figures at a flea market today.
