Use a round item that is the same size as the curls you want. I've used actual curlers, pencils, dowling, etc. You can use pins, foil, etc to help keep it in place. I like to put the styled head into a plastic baggie to keep it dry, especially if I'm not familiar with the kind of hair the doll has or if I've painted it. Dip the head in hot(not boiling) water. I usually microwave water in a small dish for a minute or so. If it's too hot, the hair can be damaged.
Hey! Where's the waiter with the water for my daughter?

I've rerooted and styled several dolls after learning how to do a boil perm. I start with clean, wet hair then comb it out as easily as possible. I take straws and cut them into about 2.5 inch pieces to act as rollers. Then I use either tissue paper (for gift bags) or paper towels to act as the rolling paper. Cut them to small pieces large enough that when you section off the hair in pieces, the paper will be long enough to fold around the hair making sort of a pocket for the hair to fit into. Then roll it up with the roller and secure on top of the head with sewing pins, making sure you do not puncture the actual face with the pin..the scalp is the best spot. Then after all the hair is rolled up as you want it, have a pan of boiling water and pour it over the hair into the sink. After you have poured it over all the rollers for about 10 seconds, blot hair with a paper towel or towel, then dip the hair into a bowl of ice water to "set" the curls. Keep hair submerged for about another 10 seconds. Take it out, blot again, and let air dry for about 2 days before removing rollers, pins, etc. Then you should be able to style it as you want. I have done this with Barbies, a reroot KISS Peter Criss Mego I have restored, Mego Wonder Woman, etc. It helps take the frizz out of original hair that is on the doll, i.e. Wonder Woman. Good luck!!
