Captain, that is good to know. I started with a western type of saddle because I thought that the western era was decided on by the producers because it was cheaper as far as backgrounds, and because of that I thought they used western saddles hidden by blankets. Since I couldn't really tell which saddles they were, I went with the English saddle. I have started a western saddle but didn't complete it--and that's actually harder to make but I was 60% complete before I changed midstream. I am pretty happy with what I've got. I was supposed to buy hardware for the saddle but kept putting it off until patience got the best of me. I bought a watch strap to use for the buckle but I couldn't find that last night so I cut out the buckle from one of my other watches. I will probably buy another horse and another ape soldier so that I could use that for my completed western saddle. And then start a Mclellan saddle and buy another soldier ape and start my own cavalry!

Captain, I looked at that site you provided. It was really cool, but the prices are a bit much for me. I might as well reproduce that stuff myself. Those who look outside dream. Those who look within awake.

That saddle you created looks fantastic Jessica, I would go with it too.
Hope I didnt come off as suggesting yours was sub-par or inaccurate in any way!
I've been looking at some of the pics above, as well as just having rewatched the DVD, and it looks like at least a couple of the background saddles used were western saddles with the horns removed, so your right on track anyways!"Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

Captain, this was how far I got with the western saddle before I changed mid-stream:
What I'm really proud about this saddle is how I bevelled the edges of the leather before gluing on at the cantle. Where the seams meet, it forms a super clean edge that I didn't have to cheat and glue another material to hide the edge. Those who look outside dream. Those who look within awake.

Thanks, Vman. Yes, the saddle bags were glued by me together last night as I rewatched the ape movies on AMC. Leather is so unbelievably easy to work with--you don't have to finish the edges. It's the same leather I used on the saddle, but I just used the suede side of it because it was closer to the color of the saddle bags that you had on the screenshots. Those who look outside dream. An Association style roping saddle....dead on likeness, all it needs is the skirting!
