    Short answer? Yes.
I personally deem any customizer an artist in my book.

      Art Dolls? no
      Art Action-Figures? maybe ...

I am constantly amazed at the artistic abillities of the members here. But does that make it art? It could be said we are more Craftsmen/women? Either way I love it, have since I was a kid and always will.

Currently, only BBP/EMCE has the exclusive rights to making Art dolls in this format.

At least until someone grabs the Honeymooners license.

Mrs. TBolt thinks I just make a mess. I'll let her know I'm an artist.

Who was the guy at Mego Meet in 09 who dressed as the Mugato? His customs were very High Concept/ Social commentary Art pieces. It put an idea in my head to try making art w/ Mego's. IE: The last Mego supper, The Mego-Lisa etc.
Check out my picture library of Mego-ish compatible vehicles with ID data.

Are you kidding? I have been wanting to do a Mugato costume. But the MEGO Mugato. It would be a riot!

The tag is Art Dolls are Expressive of the artist. I dont see that many original charaters to really feel that . Maybe people are shy. I've posted asking showcasing but model replica making is more the thing.

making art with megos sounds like a cool idea!

                  Here's the conclusion I personally have come to regarding this subject;

Anyone making anything creative can call what they do, whatever they wish to call it-- art, craft, painting, sculpture, product, toy, collectible, model, doll, whatever. But when someone else looks at it, the chances of them labeling it the exact same thing you do, is slim at best. Of course, it depends on who the person is looking at the work, but in general over the almost 3 decades I have made a living as an "artist", I've found that most people have their own opinions of what you create and will call it whatever they like... Do I think what I do is art? Absolutely. Does everyone else? Absolutely not.

Two words that have become more and more vague as the universe marches on in the field of creative endeavors, are ART and TALENT. Does one require the other? What constitutes art? Is talent inherent or can it be learned? Is what we do art?

The answer depends on who you're talking to and what their perspective is. Regarding custom figures specifically; Is someone who exclusively buys completed and/or painted parts and puts them together in a way not made available by a toy company, a customizer? I think so. Is he making art? I would say no.

Is someone who takes the work of other "artists" or sculptors and shrinks or enlarges it, a customizer? You bet. Is that person an artist? Is that person talented? I'd say shrinking or enlarging is considered an art, I suppose. Talent? Well, I'll say this; I've tried to do it with pieces I've sculpted in different scales and have not had very much success. That means it takes skill and perhaps a "talent" that I don't have or wish to put the time in to develop. It all depends on how you break it down and look at it.

Then you've got someone like John Farley; He makes his own bodies, his own heads, sews his own costumes and is damn good at all of it. I'd say he's a talented artist, no question, but I've heard people say that because he doesn't design his own original characters, that he's not creating art. I think that's a load of crap, but hey, what do I know? I've had people say the same about my work; "You make POTA figures, that's not original..." Well, no... But I think it takes talent to do what I and many others here can do.

                  Is it art???

Who knows? I guess the most important thing is how the creator of the work views it himself. You have to be happy with your work and with whatever nomenclature you decide to put upon it. In the grand scheme of things, who really cares what someone else thinks, in terms of TERMS.

That doesn't mean I don't shake my head when someone says that my customs or my films aren't art... I disagree because I personally feel that what I do, is art. But once someone creates ANYTHING-- Doll, figure, painting, music, film-- and puts it out there for the public to see, that person needs to be able to accept and handle, not only mentally, but spiritually, what the masses will say about their work and how they themselves, will categorize it...

                  OK, I'm done.

                  Promise.

I do think that some folks are a little too concerned w/ intricate details and facial features of action figures. That's why I like Megos. They resemble the characters they represent w/o looking like mini statues. I know action figures mean different things for different people. Some are in this purely to collect and display or collect and save as an investment. Then there are those like me who wanna play. I'm not comfortable playing w/ a piece of art. I wanna play w/ a toy.

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

CTC remind me to bribe you to write my next artist statement.

Original or not the Wiki article says Expressive. Wolverine and Batmans are always expressive and we all know why.

Hardy Girl. I wanna play with ARt AND toys. ( thats why I always got yelled at exhibits)

I would like to see more original characters though.
Yes those guys you made up when you were 5 years old.
