Usually this involves a trip to the hardware store to get expensive acetone. Would nail polish remover be just as good? Its a lot cheaper and more available than acetone.

I'm sure the concentration of acetone isn't strong enough to work well. I'm not sure what the other chemicals would do to the head. Some nail polish removers don't even contain acetone.
