    Custom Box or Card Poll/Question

Ok I just got in a wonderful Apache Chief figure from a member here who made them for Mego Meet . it came on a repro '79 card Green background the 5 usual face and the only differance being Apache Chief"s name in red above the figure. A real nice figure and i hope i get his next 2 years of exclusives. I am NOT PLaning on changing this card.

Now here's my Question.... when it comes to customs of characters Mego never made and you want to display them......

do you want to put them on a card or box that represents when you think they should have been released a '77 or '79 card with just the name changed so it looks like it was just another figure in the line?

Or do you like to come up with what other characters that should have been the next set and have a custom card with 8 new figures on the back and 5 new faces on the front or 6 new figures on the box sides?

does that make you think they aren't Mego enough or that they are cooler as the set you choose?

Did i phrase this wrong? i'm just interested in knowing if i'm the only one who wants to see the new character show up on the card art. I got a custom Flash and Green Lantern and then had boxes made for them. On the box i had the Justice League of America sheild put on the cover and under written Series One.then on the sides it showed the 6 figures for that set : Flash, Green Lantern,Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Superman and Batman. Then i got a Black Canary custom and on the box i had made was again the JLA shield with series Two under it and on the sides was Green Arrow,Martian Manhunter, Atom, Hawkman, Black Canary and Elongated Man.

So my question is: am i the only one wanting custom cards/boxes showing the set of characters in my customs .... OR .... Do you just like a Standard Mego card/box with it's original art and just the new Characters name over the figure?

This is purely preference. Myself, I'd rather keep it on the card it came on.

I like the box because that was my first experience in the early 70's... Plus, I can take the figure out if I choose.

If I make the custom myself I take a box. If I buy a custom and it came carded I keep it that way

              I second Megospidey's amen.

My favorite custom boxes are the ones that riff on the Mego style box but take it to another level. I'm not really trying to make my collection fit in with the originals. I want something that looks cool.

The Toyroom does some really cool things with his boxes that to me are better to own than something that looks like it was designed in the 70s.

But I totally understand the idea of trying to recapture the look and feel from yesteryear and more power to those who feel that way.

That's what is great about custom collections. They not only reflect the taste, skill and talent of the customizer, but also the taste (not so much the skill or talent) of the custom collector.

It would be nice to include "like" charactors on a certain card or box. IE Super Friends art on a Super Friends custom's card/box. The problems gotta be finding good clean images to achieve that. Some people here are really good at cleaning up such artwork and putting custom cards/boxes together.

On the question that the thread has generated. I originally found my Mego's carded at K-Mart. But I'm beginning to lean towards boxes as a space saving measure.

                  How about this....

To me, personally, it depends on the action figure I'm working on.
If it's a restoration, I prefer the box/card to look like what that figure originally came in, artwork and all.
If I'm doing a custom figure, then I tend to gravitate more to a custom style card, but keep it close to the look of the card that character might've been released on 'back in the day'.
                  Does that make sense?

                  Allow me to elaborate:
I'm doing Star Trek Mego customs of Dr. M'benga and a couple of security guards that were featured on the show. Now, I am using the Star Trek style card to display them, but I changed all of the portraits on the front to reflect the other Star Trek customs I'm doing (Kirk in a green tunic, McCoy in the medical smock, and the Romulan commander) as well as they're own portraits.
As a matter of fact, I'm redesigning the back of the card to feature some photos from the episodes these characters were on, as well as a brief explaination as to who they are & why I made customs of them in the first place, while still trying to keep in the style & spirit that the original Mego artwork was done.

So, they have the look of the original packaging at first glance, but closer inspection reveals that they are obviously not.

After I'm long gone, I would hate to have any of these mistaken as original '70s Megos, much less be passed off or auctioned as such.

At last ! someone gets what i'm really asking.

I made a Cyclops from the X-Men Figure, so i had a great box made by Toyroom her at the MM.
I didn't want the standard marvel box with just his name , so i had him put the 5 original X-Men and Prof. X on the side panels.
it still looks Mego but also shows theres more and different to come.

Brian L made me a Green Lantern and Flash figures ages ago so i had toyroom make me new cards with thier faces and 3 other new faces on the card and 8 new characters on the back. basically looking like this is the next wave of figures that could have come out.

so i was trying to see what percentage of customizers would make cards like that or just use a Mego card and put the new characters name on top.

i thought i would get more and better responses.

I get it....... i went through the same thought process when i was having a backer card made for my custom Creature. Last year we got a Franky and Werewolf from EMCE and Diamond Select Toys. We're getting Dracula and Mummy this Fall. I wanted my Creech to go with these guys, but in the same breath, i wanted him to be a little different since he was my custom. I still wanted to go with the classic Universal Monsters theme so my card looks a little different is all. My creech is essentially "wave 2" of the Universal Monsters figures...... with a new card design. This way when and if we ever get a Creature in the current line, my backer card will still "work" for my Creech.

I chose to have a backer card done that i could display in a Super Clam with the figure so i could easily remove the figure if i wanted to. I could have done the same with a box, but i thought the figure would display more prominently on a card. Anthony does do a wonderful job doesn't he!

I have thought about who else should be shown on Box art. Originally I wanted only other characters i liked or planned on making.
I usually just trust the box makers judgement. I try to give a few suggestions i would like to see, but leave the rest open .
If I get an idea TOO complicated for a box I scrap it . EX: I wanted to do a textless ( like the newspaper in the film= wordless comic strips)" Farenheit 451" Fireman package but I couldnt find a comic adaption to use, and it was just too much of a challange right now.

My own 2c... I like the idea of putting new characters on the packaging, but if I put someone on the packaging, then I'd feel compelled to make a corresponding figure. It would bug me to have Professor X on the card if the figure didn't really exist.
