    Talking Mego

Anyone ever try making their custom figure talk?

I've been thinking about how to do it. I suppose one could buy a greeting card that allows you to record/playback a message and use that. There's a local build-a-bear custom teddy bear store that sells talking bears that I'm going to check out too.

Anyone ever try this? Any ideas?

    bigDAWGS greetings

I used one of these recordable sound chips to make my Dharma Van play music. I am planning on ordering a batch for Didas. They are awesome.

you would need to re-engineer the way the body is connected and how all these parts go in the chest cavity... not that hard but it would take some work.
Less than 10 bucks to try is not bad. Somewhere I saw all the GI Joe commands as wave (?) files

I'm not sure it would be possible to put it in a body, actually. Certainly the one I got from them didn't but maybe one of the newer models. Inserting it into a playset/display could work, or maybe something like a backpack??

Don't they make mini recorders--something about the size of a pen? That could work too.

You would have to totally take that whole thing apart and jam it in a chest... it will definately be a job with some challenges... but thats what makes it fun

I've done "talking" boxes but haven't done a talking figure yet...

Lst night I bought a talking greeting card and recorded the original command "I've Got a Tough Assignment For You".

Then I ripped it apart to realize there was no frikkin way that was going inside the figure.

That said, I love the back-pack idea. Just might try that. Thanks guys.

I'll also look around for those James Bond pens as well.

Know this is an old thread but just spotted.

A company called Voice-Express makes a smallish unit that was meant to be attached to the back of picture frames so that a recorded message to be added to any image (as opposed to being stuck with the frequently hi-tech look of frames with built-in recorders).

I can only seem to find it listed on "romantic gift" sites but here's an example:
Voice Chip - Creative Romantic Gifts

I used one to make a stuffed parrot say a particular line from a movie.

As it is it's WAY too big to fit in an 8" MEGO though it might work in a 12". But that's using the housing as found; I've never opened one to see if it could be cut down or whatever but at around $10, might be worth a shot.

BTW, I know they have a bad rap, but D2D Toys make -- or are planning to make -- a figure called the Zolotonic that allows you to download sound clips from your computer via USB to a chip inside the chest cavity. At $85 it's hardly something you can afford to screw around with but it does give an idea of what's possible.

                          Hmmmm....

It SHOULD be possible, theoreticly. I'd get the guts from a card.... you might have to take them apart and shorten wires and such. I'd use a custom torso, and holow out two halves indie; the front half for the limb riggings, and the back half for the electronics. It'd take some handy Dremel work.
