simple problem? Stripe down pant leg:

I'm doing a Major Bludd 1983 GI Joe custom and . . he has a green stripe down one leg.

I have the brown jumpsuit BUT
-I cant glue a ribbon because of the knee and it will come loose .
-I cant sew a ribbon because the thread will stick out from the plastic ribbon.
-I havent been able to find braiding ( like on Star Trek uniforms) that wasnt "rippled"
-I dont think fabric paint will look all that good, again because of the bending knee.
    - I bought embroidery thread but I'm afraid it wont look like a stripe, just stiches.

(I'm not going to rip open the leg and sew piping in. I hope I wont . . . .)

I'm sure plenty of characters have stripes down the leg people have had to deal with. Like uh . . . . Candian Mounties !

    any tips?

Most of the fabric paint I have used is just markers that you iron in.

Wouldnt work on this. Brown is too dark.
( what would MEGO have done? Screenprinting most likely)

    Thanks for any help !

Could you could sorta fake screenprinting maybe. Use some tape to stencil out the line and get some acrylic based fabric paint that would be more opaque.

Often when people screenprint on dark fabrics they lay a white layer down as a base - so you could try doing a white and then a green layer too maybe?

Honestly, I've never done this - I have screenprinted though, and stenciling this way would be similar.

Is there a way to glue a green strip of fabric to the clothes? that might be another option. There's also stuff like green electric tape - which might work if you're not going to be moving him a whole lot.

Again - I'm just guessing, I'm sure there are folks with WAY more experience.

the outside of the pants leg should not be a big deal to open up and resew with another piece of green fabric. You'd have to experiment, but that would be the cleanest way to do it for me. It doesn't have to be real piping. At this scale you can fake it.

They make some iron on stuff, I forgot what it was called. Maybe you could cut a strip and iron it on? They have it at the fabric shops.

              Hmmmm....

Get thin cloth and either fabric glue it on, or fold it triplicate and attach it with a stitch down the center.

I used fabric glue without any problem. The ribbon should be flexible enough to bend with the knee.

Get some green spandex from the fabric store (or online - or ask around here)

Cut the stripe out of the spandex (it moves and will stretch with the pants)

Purchase some Fabri-Tac fabric glue at Wal-mart or a hobby store.

Glue the stripe onto your pants with the fabric glue (but be careful - a little goes a long way)

I've done it with the correct color pleather and fabric glue. It flexes with the knee just fine.

Nothing simple about this type of thing IMO. The best way to do this and have really end up looking a working well is to sew it. It will give you the best finish and seamless movement. Here is an example of sewn in pipe on the legs and arms of Ghost Rider.

^^ yup, that is the best way to go...unless you don't want to rip the pants open and sew it in. Which he stated in this post.

                          FABRIC GLUE!

                          duh. I'm so silly.

I was worried about using Super Glue ( my usual in just about everything) because it would bleed through!

                          Thank you!!!!!

                          I WILL try it.

T Bolt: I didnt think of trying pleather!

CTC: yeah, the "piping" I saw at the fabric store was tri folded.

Type 3: how did you get Ghost riders chest and collar trim on?
