Creative Play vs. Collecting: My Idea for a Custom Chewbacca Part I.

    Dear Mego Fans,
My 9 year old is a huge Mego fan. It started a couple of years ago when he would pull out my collection and actually (God forbid!) play with them! It wasn't that long ago that he wanted to start preserving them by looking for replacement parts, accessories, buying repro boxes, etc. Since we're also Star Wars fans, we both fantasize about creating custom Mego Star Wars 8" action figures, especially after reading the truly heartbreaking history of how Mr. Abrams Sr. chose not to purchase the rights to the Star Wars franchise for fear of a lack of interest in the sci-fi genre at that time.
My son and I excitedly and enthusiastically fantasize of what it would have been like to have an 8" Storm Trooper or Han Solo. We have interesting and vibrant discussions describing in detail which bodies would be used (T-2 fat body for the bar tender in the cantina) and which accessories would have come with each character-figure back in the day (definitely use The Klingon's boots for Solo's. White combat boot for the Storm Trooper's? How about Friar Tuck's robe for Obi Wan? See how much fun this could be?). Since the WGSH didn't use many weapons we rely heavily on Action Jackson and his military gear and equipment, staying true to the company's practice of re-using already-made accessories and costumes with a little color change here and an addition there with, of course, new sculpts for heads (could they use the Lizard for Gorn AND Gredo?).
We like to daydream about the possible early versions, our "make-believe" first-runs of the series where Mego was waiting to see if this new sci-fi flick would hit or flop with audiences, therefore not investing a great deal in new molds like a crossbow laser rifle. (Just use the M-16 for Chewie. It's good enough for the Apes!)
Speaking of the "walking carpet," in Part II I'll discuss my idea for a make-believe, first-run Chewbacca. I think this would be an awesome project to take on and share with fans. We could create a category in the "customs" department that would describe these as "traditional," or "approximate to original production," or perhaps, "approximate to manufacturing standards of the time." It would really get you into some serious searching around for parts and accessories. Talk about a good time! Who could make an 8" Star Wars Mego and have it look like they went back in time to say, July, 1976, and bought a "Galaxies Greatest Super Heroes! Mego 8" Star Wars Action Figure!?!" You could actually visualize the imagery on the blister pack, can't you? Wow! We could even get into playsets and vehicles! Ahhh... What if...?

Mego would still be here if they would not have passed on Star Wars. At least through the 80s and part of the 90s. That was a dumb mistake
