The Lazy Customizer Presents: My kind of Cowboy!

As always, sorry for el crappo pix. The next Custom I post will have better chronicling; I'll have a new camera by then. But for now:

This anonymous blonde cowboy is on a Three Stooges body, so he stands a little smaller than your garden variety Mego:

What what else is he? Well, I used to haunt Ebay and dollar stores for custom fodder, and there was a 4 (5?) 1/2 line called 'Frontier heroes' back in the 90s. They used to be pictured at the Michael Crawford's Western Action Figure Archive, but that site appears to be long gone. Here's a Wyatt Earp with horsey set from that same line to get the idear:

There were also 12" figures from the line: Here's our source figure in the 1:6 scale:

You get the idea. Super crappy, 5-point swivel joint articulated figures with removable cloth outfits and squishy heads. Here's Wyatt next to our cowboy. Wyatt could and eventually will make the transition to Mego-like someday soon:

So the heads swap onto the stooge bodies with very little effort - I might've had to enlarge the hole, but that's about it.

The clothes fit, sorta, but you really have no choice but to use Fighting Fury Pirate boots if you don't want your cowboy showing an unmanly amount of knee. At least for blondie. Wyatt's pants look a mite longer. Either way, the height difference between source figure and Stooge is quite pronounced, and I think the head and clothes might just be a little too small for a Mego proper body.

Most of you probably think they're too small for the body I put them on! I'm sure they'd do fine on a 6" Lion Rock though. But Cowboys should be tall, I reckon.

If you were less lazy, you'd make or get better pants. But I see no reason not to just get the appropriate boots instead!

Actually, that vest looks pretty good on a type 2 Mego body.

      It surely does.

DeForest has a great face for a cowboy, too. Cool!

Dude that is cool! Really made me chuckle. I think he looks more like a park ranger then a cowboy, but it could just be my lazy eye! Really good job though. I think you should call them simple customs instead of lazy. Still takes some thought and work to put them together.

I have one of the cowboys and Indians from the 12" line. My answer to the Lone Ranger and Tonto.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

Thanks for the support - but though the customs may be simple, I truly AM lazy. I'm self-deprecating, too. But if there's sewing, sculpting, or painting involved, it likely isn't my custom. Wait until I post the next one - I did a little coloring on a face with a magic marker.

I hope this changes someday, but I'm a big fan of good, professional looking work, and I know I wouldn't be happy with my end results and would quickly get discouraged that my stuff doesn't look like Captain Mego's, or Dave Mc's, or any one of a bunch of guys whose work I respect.

Plus, the look I prefer is a figure that looks manufactured rather than handmade, and I know it's going to take a lot more practice to get to the point where I'd be happy with my end results.

Perhaps I'll dip my toe into that pool as I have to do more and more work to match a head to a body, or find two outfits that can be sewn together to make the perfect whole. At that point, I'll be doing so much work to avoid casting the head or sculpting a copy, my nickname won't apply.

But for now, I'm the laziest customizer you know.

I think he looks pretty cool. I'm glad you explained all the different bits you used.

I didn't even know that there are some Megos that are slightly smaller than your average ones. Other than the 3 stooges, are there others of that stature? I want to keep a look out for those and eventually get one. I want to make Lucius someday...

Thanks Jess! Yeah, there are a lot of Mego-like bodies out there and ways to mix and match parts from them. The museum custom section has a great page to get you started on a good range of figure bodies. Check it out!

Thanks! I'll try when posting - it depends on how much of the source material I have on hand when I post the figure. I just found a few of my projects going through my storage locker and felt like sharing, so it was pure luck that I found the source figs too. I gots lots o' junk in there.

Funny thing is prior to trek. Deforest Kelly did a few TV westerns (as were popular before Trek TOS) I think I seen him as a baddy on "The Virginian" or Gunsmoke. So this custom is kinda appropraite.
                        and COOL!!!
